About this role

About this role

Transition Management - Portfolio Manager

The Transition Management team helps clients to restructure their investment portfolios. The business delivers both project and risk management to our clients to reduce costs and risks when undergoing large changes to their portfolio allocations.

BlackRock's Transition Management team manages more than 300 transitions a year from offices in London, Budapest, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. This global team, consisting of over 60 professionals, offers one of the industry's most comprehensive transition management platforms.

We partner with clients by understanding their objectives, creating custom solutions, and implementing trading strategies to achieve their goals. Our clients include central banks, sovereign wealth funds, public and corporate pension plans, asset managers and other institutional investors.

The Role

Transition Management is a high trust product where clients delegate a significant proportion of their assets to BlackRock for a short period of time. The ideal candidate would enjoy problem solving and would need to analyse, interpret, and articulate complex multi-dimensional scenarios.

The diversity of transactions, breadth of asset classes and access to a large pool of intellectual capital translates into a position where no two days are the same. The role will involve managing portfolio restructurings for institutional clients and working within a multi-asset class environment across a range of financial instruments.

The successful candidate will need to communicate effectively and foster productive working relationships with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally. Team members collectively own their successes and failures and are part of an environment where there is a strong commitment to develop and grow careers, with a focus on passion and excellence. An appetite to learn is a must.

Attention to detail, interpersonal skills and technical knowledge are at the core of the skills required to be a successful member of the team.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the team's communication and presentations with clients, from the initial pitch to the post-transition debrief
  • Collaborating closely with clients to gain a comprehensive understanding of their investment portfolios and the desired changes across asset classes, regions, and/or strategies
  • Conducting in-depth analysis of the portfolio changes to evaluate the shifts in exposure and required trading. This includes estimating all aspects of risk and cost, and devising bespoke complex trading strategies to mitigate them
  • Coordinating the execution of the agreed strategy with the internal global trading desks, ensuring it performs as expected and making live market adjustments as necessary
  • Overseeing the client's portfolio during its restructuring, including managing exposures, hedges, foreign exchange, trading activity, and corporate actions
  • Building strong relationships across the organisation by being at the heart of investment change - this includes working with trading desks, investment teams, sales channels, and the operational platform
  • Establishing strong relationships with the equity, fixed income and FX trading desks

Skills and competencies required

  • 4-8 years of experience at an asset manager or investment bank in an investment or technical role, such as portfolio management, portfolio construction, risk management or trading.
  • Direct experience of managing institutional equity, fixed income or multi-asset portfolios seen as a big plus
  • Degree or higher-level education, preferably in a quantitative subject
  • An interest in capital markets and portfolio management
  • Motivated to drive projects forward
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritise tasks in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • High level of proficiency in Excel, programming languages (e.g. VBA & Python) a plus
  • Good communicator. European language skills a strong plus
  • Reliable and trusted teammate with strong integrity and ethics
  • Emotional ownership, high energy, curious, diligent and attention to details are critical to succeed
  • Self-motivated, confident and proactive problem solver with a positive "can-do" attitude
