Job Title: Collateral Underwriter

Reports to: Collateral Underwriting Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Overview

We invite applications for the position of Collateral Underwriter, a critical role within our organization where you will be tasked with examining and evaluating appraisals to ensure compliance with established lending standards and program guidelines. Candidates with a thorough understanding of the lending process and familiarity with FNMA, FHMLC, FHA, and VA guidelines will be highly regarded. Preferred qualifications include certifications such as FHA DE and/or VA SAR. We seek a professional with outstanding organizational capabilities who excels in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough reviews and underwriting of collateral, ensuring that appraisals satisfy investor and program criteria, aiming to complete 8-10 appraisals daily with a turnaround time of 24 hours or as directed by the Underwriting Manager.
  • Analyze FNMA CU findings, focusing on the selection of comparable appraisals, marketability, and the acceptance of valuations, to uphold required standards.
  • Request and assess revisions to appraisals, desk reviews, and field reviews when necessary.
  • Verify the accuracy and consistency of appraisals by cross-referencing with essential documents such as title, flood certifications, and purchase agreements.
  • Maintain a robust understanding of conventional appraisal requirements; familiarity with FHA and VA appraisal standards is advantageous.
  • Clearly communicate appraisal decisions to the branch, including any conditions, reasons for suspense, or denials as required.
  • Ensure prompt and professional responses to quality control or post-close findings.
  • Execute additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, particularly in appraisal underwriting.
  • Current FHA DE certification is preferred; VA SAR certification is an asset.
  • Proficient in FNMA CU tools, Microsoft Outlook, and Encompass.
  • Capable of managing high-volume workloads while meeting productivity benchmarks.
  • Strong grasp of Agency/Investor lending guidelines.
  • Exceptional professionalism and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of mortgage underwriting experience, with a preference for appraisal underwriting expertise.
  • Preferred certifications include FHA DE and/or VA SAR.
  • A solid understanding of conventional appraisal requirements is necessary.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills to effectively prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, contributing positively to team dynamics.
