Job Overview

Join our progressive public media organization dedicated to serving the San Diego community through an array of platforms, including television, radio, and digital media. Our purpose is to inform, educate, and entertain while delivering high-caliber programming that resonates with both local and national audiences. As a member of our team, you will play a pivotal role in crafting engaging narratives that shine a light on the educational landscape and influence positive change within the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage in people-centered journalism as the Education Reporter, focusing on the vital stories that illustrate the experiences of students, educators, and lifelong learners.
  • Investigate and report on key educational topics, emphasizing accountability, readiness for life, and mental, social, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Produce captivating news content for various platforms, including radio, TV, web, and social media.
  • Conduct thorough research, write, and produce stories, collaborating effectively with producers, photographers, and videographers.
  • Stay informed on developments in education, develop a robust reporting beat, and generate compelling story ideas.
  • Support the newsroom in various capacities, including anchoring newscasts and participating in community outreach events.

Required Skills

  • Strong news judgment coupled with a solid understanding of journalistic ethics.
  • Proficiency in writing engaging stories tailored for both broadcast and digital channels.
  • Essential audio and video editing skills; a willingness to learn is valued.
  • Experience or willingness to perform live reporting for radio and TV.
  • Familiarity with AP style and broadcasting standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build professional relationships within the community.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage tight deadlines and multiple story assignments.
  • Reliable transportation and possession of a valid driver's license with proof of insurance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • A minimum of two years in a reporting role, with preference for candidates with previous education reporting experience.
