Your goal is to provide servant leadership and coaching to Questrade’s Customer Journeys (Journey). You will be responsible for facilitating the Journey and Mission specific events and processes, coaching and assisting the Agile squads, delivering value on a continuous basis and during each quarter (PI).

You will work alongside varying levels of Leadership including but not limited to Technology, Journey Office, Agile squads, Technology Chapters, Product Management, Scrum Masters and Enabling functions (Legal, Risk etc.) in order to deliver on our core values of customer centric delivery and continuous improvement. You will also help identifying cross functional dependencies, escalating impediments and managing risk inside and across the customer Journeys..

You have solid working experience in Lean and Scaled Agile methodologies. You deeply understand the opportunities and challenges associated with facilitating and continuously aligning a large development for our customer Journey. In addition, you will partner with Portfolio Enablement Leads to understand and support large Strategic Enterprise deliverables for internal partners and enable rapid growth in our technology squad.

What’s it like working as an Agile Release Train Engineer at Questrade?

This specialist role drives and optimizes Agile practices and provides support and guidance to the Journey to ensure it is delivering against the planned and committed OKRs. It is vital that each squad collaborates well and understands our Agile mission so your role is critical to the success of each individual squad and collectively as the Journey. A key element of the role is to ensure Inspect and Adapt events are implemented across the organization so there is continuous improvement.

The Release Train Engineer RTE is in overall end-to-end charge of leading and facilitating PI planning processes and events. This includes:

  • Accountability for promoting and embracing the Agile Mindset through teaching and coaching
  • Facilitating conversations around OKRs and helping the Journey Leadership evolve a vision supported by aspirational OKRs
  • Identifying, tracking and monitoring squad dependencies
  • Communicating squad health
  • Raising issues and concerns to leadership
  • Coaching and training on best practices
  • Sharing agile concepts between squads and bridging the gap between squads, stakeholders and leadership
  • Enhancing the overall synergies between all squads, Missions and Journeys.

  • Facilitate PI Planning readiness by fostering a Continuous Exploration process which drives the synthesis of a Vision, a Roadmap, Backlogs and through Pre-PI and Post-PI Planning events
  • Facilitate the PI planning event
  • Manage and optimize the flow of value through the Journey using various tools
  • Establish and communicate the annual calendars for Iterations and Program Increments (PIs)
  • Assist in scaling the Journey as a result of headcount growth and the introduction of new agile squads.
  • Summarize squad PI Objectives into Mission and Journey PI Objectives and publish them for visibility and transparency
  • Assist tracking the execution of features and capabilities
  • Facilitate periodic synchronization events, including the Journey sync
  • Assist with economic decision-making by facilitating feature and capability estimation by squads and the roll-up to Epics.
  • Where necessary - Coach leaders, squads, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets
  • Provide input on resourcing to address critical bottlenecks
  • Encourage collaboration between various squads, Missions, Enabling functions and chapters
  • Work with Journey and Mission Leadership and other stakeholders to help ensure strategy and execution alignment
  • Improve the flow of value through value streams by improving and assessing the practices associated with DevOps and Release on Demand in the Continuous Delivery Pipeline
  • Work with UX Design squad to promote UX innovation cycle
  • Work with the Journey Office (JO) on PI execution and operational excellence
  • Facilitate Mission Demos and/or Journey Demos.
  • Drive relentless improvement via Inspect and Adapt workshops; assess the agility level of the Journey squads and help them mature their Agile processes.
  • Foster Communities of Practice and the use of engineering and Built-In Quality practice

  • Advanced Agile expertise in the Digital/Technology industry running multiple Squads and ARTs, large-scale initiatives and a high volume of projects
  • 5 to 7 years in diverse roles with increasing leadership responsibilities
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to develop and communicate all PI projects and objectives, inspire and motivate staff, and maintain alignment with the business strategy
  • Demonstrated experience in listening and supporting squads in problem identification and decision-making
  • Demonstrated experience in creating an environment of mutual influence
  • Understanding and empathizing with others
  • Encourage and support the personal development of each individual and the development of squads
  • Coach people with powerful questions rather than use authority
  • Experience in surfacing squad Health Metrics in order to improve velocity.
  • Experience contributing to an Agile PMO
  • Ability to bridge the gap between technical, creative, and business needs to help produce solutions that achieve results.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship, facilitation and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, detail-oriented, process-driven and are data and solution minded.
  • Well versed in working with the following tools: G-Suite, JIRA, Confluence, Atlas, Project Management collaboration tools with evidence of practical application.
  • A high degree of political sensitivity, astuteness and the ability to use the informal power structure of the organization to achieve Customer Journey (ART) success and overcome obstacles.
  • A high level of empathy and the ability to vary styles of interaction to match the needs of a variety of temperaments and personalities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain and “sell” the Journey and Mission goals and OKRs to the business, as well as technical leadership.
  • Strong business acumen, including industry and domain-specific knowledge of the organization and its business units. Familiarity with industry trends and innovation.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic planning and execution skills.
