Job description

Located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown offers rigorous academic programs, a global perspective, exciting ways to take advantage of Washington, D.C., and a commitment to social justice. Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

The National Institute of Standards (NIST) recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a Professional Research Experience (PREP) program award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

The Robotics Systems Technician/Engineer will conduct experiments and analyze data to understand 3D machine vision robotic systems and support the development of standards for measuring their depth error and depth resolution, as well as for measuring the performance of robotic systems used for bin-picking applications. Task can include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Program and maintain robots (arms, mobile robots, exoskeletons).

  • Operate and maintain measurement equipment (e.g., laser trackers, laser scanners, oscilloscopes).

  • Assist in recording and analyzing test data and preparing test reports.

  • Perform simple preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, adjustment, and repairs of laboratory equipment.

  • Assist in performing market research for purchases required for the laboratories.

  • Use CAD software to design parts, end-of-arm tooling, and fixtures.

  • Record knowledge and best practices to help improve efficiency and productivity.

  • Conduct tests in the laboratory as well as in the field, and preparing test reports

Work Interactions

This position will interact as part of the NIST/GU PREP team, and will be jointly supervised and managed by a GU scientist (typically the Georgetown Director of the GU/PREP program) and a NIST scientist. In most cases the technical work will be carried out at NIST, but in other cases the work will be carried out at Georgetown. The position will also interact with other scientists on the specific project. The overall goal of the position is to support and enhance the NIST/PREP program, which promotes scientific training in research for researchers with a wide spectrum of backgrounds and expertise (including students, post-doctoral researchers, and senior research faculty, in addition to this specific position).

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in physical sciences, engineering or related field (or a training certificate in robotics, engineering, or automation); The Associates degree is appropriate for  Technician, while the Bachelor’s Degree is appropriate for an Engineer

  • Experience using gauge blocks and/or micrometers and a basic understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing

  • Experience in using digital oscilloscopes, multimeters, and environmental monitoring instruments (thermometers, hygrometers, etc.)

  • Experience with CAD software such as Solidworks

  • Experience in programming robots (using a teach pendant, hand guidance, and a command line interface)

  • Experience using basic hand and power tools and operating safely in a laboratory environment

  • Experience using fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers

  • Ability to work without close supervision in a team environment

  • Experience in using software tools such as Matlab, Python, Excel (or other) to analyze data

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Experience in using dimensional measurement instruments (such as laser trackers, laser scanners, coordinate measurement machines, etc.)

  • Experience in using Python, C++, C#, JAVA, etc. for programming/controlling robots

  • Experience in using the robot operating system (ROS) to program robots

  • Experience in using simulation software (e.g., MoveIT, RoboDK, etc.) to program robots

  • Experience with basic machine tools (e.g., drill press, band saw, lathe, etc.)

  • Experience with programming and using CNC milling machines
