Job Overview

We are seeking a committed HECM (Home Equity Conversion Mortgage) Underwriter to join our dynamic team in a fully remote capacity. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for underwriting residential loans, ensuring compliance with both internal standards and external regulatory requirements. Your expertise will be essential in scrutinizing loan documentation for precision and completeness, while collaborating with Loan Originators, Branch Managers, and Processing teams to gather all requisite documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to established guidelines for reviewing loan applications and documentation while ensuring compliance with HECM policies.
  • Maintain acceptable turnaround times for initial loan decisions and review conditions in alignment with departmental objectives.
  • Collaborate effectively with Quality Control, Compliance, and Funding teams to address issues and evaluate associated risks.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of HECM product guidelines and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Make adjustments to loan terms as necessary and identify additional conditions to support sound credit judgments.
  • Evaluate borrower profiles comprehensively, ensuring the accuracy of income documentation, tax returns, credit reports, and appraisals.
  • Exhibit proficiency in manual underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Stay informed about secondary market trends and industry practices that may influence underwriting integrity and origination processes.
  • Foster strong relationships through effective communication with Loan Originators, management, and processing teams.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in residential loan underwriting.
  • Strong grasp of FHA/HECM policies and various fraud detection techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities, particularly in relationship management.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in residential loan underwriting is required.
  • DE certification and recent FHA underwriting experience are highly preferred.
  • Proven capability to excel in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
  • Experience managing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prior experience in mortgage processing is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with repurchase responses and rebuttal reviews is a plus.
