Description

Pharmacists Mutual has an opening for a Risk Management Intern for Summer 2025. The Risk Management Intern will look at data associated with past claims trends that result in property damage and/or harm to people looking for trends and provide updates on past claims studies. 

The intern will prepare at least one closed case claims analysis identifying what happened and what could have been done differently by the insured after the claim to mitigate losses and furthermore what the insured could have done to prevent the claim to begin with.  The closed case claims study will be presented to the executive management team in-person and the intern will be expected to answer any questions.  It is expected the work product from the intern's work will be publishable on PHMIC's social media and made available to members in the form of an intel or other similar media.

Essential Functions

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:    

  • Manage a project to develop a closed case claims study.
  • Learn how to use computer programs used in the insurance industry.
  • Develop an understanding of claims data and make extrapolations to develop methodologies to prevent similar claims.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge in understanding root causes leading up to an incident that results in property damage and/or harm to people.
  • Ability to quickly learn new computer systems.
  • Ability to read detailed documents, extrapolate information and develop conclusions even when desired data points may be missing.
  • Exposure to the basic principles of Risk Management.
  • Team player with ability to build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Effectively organizes and prioritizes work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately and independently while paying close attention to detail.
  • Utilize computer and related software effectively.
Qualifications

Experience and Education Qualifications

  • Must have completed 2 years of college
  • Pursuing a degree in public health, insurance or similarly related degree
  • Candidate must be willing to travel to the Algona, IA office for one week at the beginning and end of the internship.  Travel and hotel expenses will be paid. 

Work Environment

  • Primary work environment is in a climate-controlled office setting or at your in-home office
