The Audience Experiences team at the USA Today Network is seeking an innovative journalist to spearhead our artificial intelligence initiatives. This position is perfect for an ambitious visionary who wishes to impact the media industry's future, leveraging AI technology to enhance the way information is produced, distributed, and accessed.

The AI Experience Lead will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including editorial leaders, product managers, and journalists, to drive projects that improve the reporting process and enhance the audience experience.

They will help make our workflows more efficient while attending to newsrooms’ needs and building trust and habit with their communities. They will strive to ensure that our AI initiatives align with our editorial standards and audience needs, ultimately driving engagement and loyalty.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of journalism ethics and a strong background in AI technologies. You are an empathetic collaborator who excels in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and you are motivated by the opportunity to shape the future of the news experience.

This position is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii.

The Successful Candidate Will Need To

  • Oversee the ideation and development of AI-powered audience experiences, upholding journalistic standards and advocating for our readers, listeners, and viewers.
  • Collaborate with editorial stakeholders in local markets to explore and implement automation technologies to streamline newsroom operations.
  • Lead audience research initiatives and analyze behavior data to identify trends and opportunities for AI editorial projects.
  • Support our company’s AI roadmap.
  • Provide training and support to journalists on AI tools.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and improvement.
  • Lead pilot projects to test and refine AI tools.
  • Act as the voice of the newsroom in discussions about AI and emerging technologies.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in generative AI and their potential impact on news companies.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of newsroom experience, preferably in roles like editor or audience strategist.
  • In-depth knowledge of AI concepts and technologies, including recommendation algorithms, generative AI, and machine learning.
  • Proven record of building tools and systems for the newsroom or launching news products.
  • Experience leading multiple projects simultaneously, staying organized and focused to meet deadlines.
  • A commitment to producing high-quality journalism and empathy for the informational needs of local communities.
  • Basic understanding of user experience (UX) principles.

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $59,400 and $140,300. Variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, location, and union representation, if applicable.
