The location for this position is flexible within Argentina. This position is not eligible for relocation or immigration assistance. The position involves regular domestic travel and may include international travel.

What We Can Achieve Together

The Gran Chaco External Affairs and Policy Advisor will plan, implement and coordinate actions to establish and/or deepen relations with public agencies, government, multilateral agencies, international institutions and companies, in order to advance with the conservation objectives of TNC’s Gran Chaco Iconic Place. He/she will also monitor internationally negotiated agreements, legislative, administrative, and/or corporate initiatives and policies, which are related to our work in the Gran Chaco. Duties include regular contact with local, sub-national, country, and multilateral officials, institutions and/or corporate representatives, regarding actions related to the mission of TNC.

The Gran Chaco External Affairs and Policy Advisor will coordinate the policy strategy of the projects in the Gran Chaco (such as Future Landscapes, Foodscape, Zero Conversion Commodities, among others), serving as an expert on key national and local policy matters, and supporting the leadership of the Gran Chaco in decisions related to policy and external affairs. In order to reach our objectives and scale up our conservation initiatives, he/she will be responsible for policy research and related communications, developing strategic partnership with key stakeholders, preparing technical inputs and outreach material, and coordinating meetings, agendas and presentations. Furthermore, the Gran Chaco External Affairs and Policy Advisor will coordinate his/her work with the regional policy team and ensure they are sharing policy work and planning as required, focusing in advancing TNC’s strategies (e.g., Regenerative Agriculture and Ranching, Zero Deforestation and Conversion, Sustainable Food Systems, Global Regenerative Foodscapes, Climate Policy and Markets, among others).

The Gran Chaco External Affairs and Policy Advisor may also be required to attend and represent TNC in fundraising activities, seeking to increase the level of financial and/or strategic support for TNC projects and priorities in the Gran Chaco.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Work closely with the Gran Chaco Iconic Place Lead and the Portfolio Management Officer to contribute to the area´s objectives and scaling strategy.
  • Work directly with the Gran Chaco Iconic Place team to strengthen the policy and external affairs strategy.
  • Lead the establishment of new relations and/or the strengthening existing ones with public agencies, government, multilateral agencies, international institutions, NGOs, companies and civil society in general.
  • Conduct policy research and write reports, narratives, analytical documents, policy briefs and related strategic communications in support of the Gran Chaco Projects (e.g., Future Landscape, Foodscape, Zero Conversion Commodities, among others).
  • Support the revision of consultancy products within projects of the Gran Chaco.
  • Provide environmental and agricultural considerations in international trade agreement negotiations and sub-national agreements.
  • Focal point between the Gran Chaco Iconic Place and global staff to amplify and elevate perspectives on strategic pathway from the Gran Chaco to international and multilateral policy forums and institutions.
  • Participate in the European deforestation policy group/primary point of contact for Europe Policy Lead.
  • Design and implement a strategy for political engagement in the regional, national and local levels in Argentina to promote the TNC’s priorities related to the scope of the Gran Chaco Projects, such as Future Landscape Program Foodscape, Foodscape, Zero Conversion Commodities Strategy, among others.
  • Provide input and advice the leadership of the Gran Chaco in policy decision-making processes.
  • Contribute to the development of project proposals that have a significant component of policy actions and/or relations with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for the Board and BU.
  • Ensure program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • Under minimal supervision, makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.
  • Work with staff across the organization and provide support to BU leadership.
  • May work in varying weather conditions, remote locations, difficult and dangerous terrain, and physically demanding circumstances.

Minimum Requirements

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of related senior-level work experience, with a demonstrated expertise in public policy, agriculture, biodiversity conservation, environmental policy, regulatory advocacy, public funding and/or climate change.
  • Have a deep understanding of the Gran Chaco Region and its key private and public actors.
  • Have extensive connections with crucial stakeholders from the region.
  • Experience building strong relationships across an organization and with partners such as public agencies, government, multilateral agencies, international institutions, NGOs, companies, among others.
  • Experience working with current and evolving political, legislative, sustainability, and/or conservation trends on an international, regional, country or sub-national level.
  • Experience in leading or participating in complex negotiations and presenting to and communicating with government officials, corporate executives, board members and others.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing multiple and multifaceted projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
  • Experience communicating complex processes and ideas effectively to a variety of audiences within and outside an organization.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication, negotiating and organizational skills.
  • Independent and self-motivated with the ability to participate effectively in a remote team environment.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English. Proficiency and proven experience writing documents in both languages.
