The Sr. Director – Field Medical Scientific Strategy is responsible for leading the development and execution of Medical Science Liaison (MSL) scientific strategy.  The Sr. Director is responsible for developing prioritized, relevant, and agile scientific strategies for field medical.  The Sr. Director will: capitalize on collated and distilled field insights, identify unmet needs, and lead others to develop new content solutions.  The Sr. Director will work broadly, and cross-functionally, to accomplish these goals.

Responsibilities:

Scientific Strategy: Creation / Development

  • Lead the development and ongoing refinement of the MSL scientific strategy in partnership with cross-functional colleagues, including: MSL leadership, MSL subject matter experts (SMEs), internal Medical Affairs business partners, and other functions responsible for global content creation.
  • Act as curator and provide leadership oversight of the TA-specific scientific strategy tools, scientific engagement plan, and scientific component of MSL launch readiness plans.
  • Lead the development of new content and accountable to ensure all content goes through the appropriate review / approval process.
  • Lead the collection, interpretation, and distillation of MSL insights.  Anticipate needs (based on trends) and identify gaps to influence actions that address unmet medical needs.
  • Lead development of MSL scientific onboarding for new staff in partnership with MSL leadership and MSL SMEs.
  • Lead creation of routine scientific trainings / sessions, which ensure team mastery and effective real-world application of relevant scientific data.

Scientific Strategy: Execution

  • Ensure current awareness of the TA-specific scientific strategy.
  • Lead team training on forthcoming data disclosures.
  • Lead activities which facilitate the broad, internal communication of distilled field insights which enable MSL teams to share unmet need and solutions.
  • Lead onboarding and ongoing scientific training sessions for new and existing MSLs and MSL leadership through delivery and facilitation of SMEs to deliver scientific training on forthcoming data disclosures, congress presentations, launch readiness or new disease areas of focus.

Leadership and Vision:

  • Share best practices and lead process optimization to create operational efficiencies which drive effectiveness.
  • Lead initiatives to maximize multi-channel-engagement for Scientific Experts (SEs), personalized content, channel, and experience.
  • Lead scientific aspects of MSL congress activities through strategic planning and partnership with MSL congress points of contact (POC) and internal colleagues.
  • Lead workshops that improve MSL interpersonal and scientific communication skills.


Basic Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in health sciences (e.g., RN, RPh, PharmD, Ph.D.) strongly preferred; bachelor’s degree considered if substantive clinical or therapeutic area experience in Cardiometabolic Health.
  • 5 years in pharmaceutical industry, with applicable affiliate medical experience preferred.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.


Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Previous field medical experience strongly preferred.
  • Scientific and clinical expertise in disease areas related to cardiometabolic health.


Additional Information:

  • Travel up to 25%
  • Remote, with considerations. Expected core working hours are in eastern time zone.
  • Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $170,250 to $249,700 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.
