YOU
As a Structural Engineer, you will provide consultation on connectors and lateral systems for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. You will be working in a collaborative environment of structural design engineers, material specialists, product managers and manufacturing experts. Your participation in product design and in product implementation will be driven by the needs of the customer, changes in materials and methods, changes in processes, and changes in building codes. You will be a technical expert in structural engineering and provide technical support and information to branch engineers, designers, customers, and other business units.
You will recommend and implement alterations and enhancements to improve quality, improve performance, enhance customer service, and reduce the cost of products. As part of the product engineering team, you will participate in product changes, process improvements, product testing, installation instructions, product related literature improvements for publication, customer support efforts, and more. Projects may include design analysis, product testing, writing performance specifications, writing material specifications, writing process specifications, and writing installation instructions. You will be a link between manufacturing, product management, sourcing, engineering, and product end users.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING (% of Time)
Provide technical and application support for products (30%)
Managing product test programs (25%)
You will break things. For over 60 years, customers have counted on Simpson Strong-Tie to provide highly engineered products with allowable loads based on physical testing. You will design tests to determine key features to optimize performance, material use and manufacturing efficiency. Our testing labs will build and test to your specifications and then break it so we can learn and improve.
Develop products for the building industry (20%)
You will develop connector and lateral systems for the building industry. Development projects are associated with new products and existing products and process changes. You will develop experimental plans, organize and analyze data, and make decisions. You will lead and manage projects, collaborate with other departments and stakeholders including but not limited to Product Managers, Marketing Managers, and manufacturing.
Work with Marketing to develop technical literature (15%)
Working with our talented Marketing team, you will develop and maintain both web-based and printed literature that supports our customers. You will provide technical support for products and develop new applications for products based on customer requests.
Provide internal support and training as well as evaluation of processes and procedures in pursuit of continual improvement (10%)
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
If you can do everything listed above, you’ve got what it takes. Perhaps some of the following would be helpful too:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering required.
- Passed NCEES Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) Exam required.
- Coursework or structural design experience, including steel, timber and/or reinforced concrete structures.
- Knowledge: Practical working knowledge of common timber, concrete and steel construction methods. Familiarity with Simpson Strong-Tie products is a plus.
- Reading Comprehension/ Speaking/Writing: Ability to read and interpret documents such as mechanical drawings, architectural and structural plans, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the Simpson Strong-Tie.
- Reasoning: Effective analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
- Organization: Strong organizational skills. Ability to prioritize multiple projects.
- Team Player: Demonstrated ability to motivate and work with team members. Must be able to connect, interface, and communicate well with a variety of internal partners in sales, marketing, IT, quality, production, and engineering.
- Communication: Strong communication skills needed as clear communication is required to effectively deliver projects to customers as well as direct team members.
- Software: Frequently used software includes Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as other software including AutoCAD and Bluebeam. Simpson Strong-Tie web apps are often used as tools for design. Basic programming knowledge in VBA (Excel and AutoCAD) or MATLAB is a plus.

This position requires domestic and international travel up to 10% of the time.
WORK STATUS & LOCATION
This full-time, exempt position is located in Pleasanton, CA. Remote work may be considered for well qualified candidates.
RELOCATION
Relocation will not be considered for this position.
PAY
$63,500 - $121,900 / year
*Posted pay range is based upon national average and may vary depending on geographical work location.
