Job description

Position Summary

The Department of OBGYN at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine is recruiting a Data Analyst to help support an R01 NIH-funded trial and several related research and evaluation projects within a growing program of research focused on improving maternal morbidity, mortality, and disparities. The OBGYN Department includes 26 faculty, with research foci across the birthing individuals’ life course and translational science (T0 – T4) continuums, and is recognized as a national leader in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology research. The data analyst would join the Maternal Health Equity Lab co-directed by Drs. Cristian Meghea and Lee Anne Roman and a vibrant group of well-funded women’s health researchers in the Departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, and other university departments. The Lab’s projects are in collaboration with multiple community partners, large health systems, the state health department, and other research partners. This position allows for remote work.

The Data Analyst will collaborate within a team of scientists, evaluators, community partners, and other data analysts in the Maternal Health Equity Lab to conduct research and evaluation to build new knowledge and address community-engaged solutions for improving the care and health of Black and Hispanic birthing individuals and their children during pregnancy and after birth. The work of the analyst will focus on multilevel intervention studies in several Michigan communities including a 5-year $3.9 million NIH grant, a 7-year, $19 million NIH-funded Center, a contract with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to support the improvement of care and health of Medicaid insured birthing individuals in Michigan, and several other multi-year projects funded from federal sources.

The Data Analyst Will Work With Complex Data Structures, Will Use Advanced Statistical Modelling, And The Analytic Approach Demands The Attention Of a Data Analyst Who Is Detail-oriented And Technically Prepared To Carry Out The Following Tasks

  • Data management tasks include: linking person-level data from multiple sources; constructing variables needed for reporting and analysis, including those from Medicaid claims and census neighborhood-level variables
  • Data analyses tasks will include preparing descriptive statistics with reports on data accuracy and missing data issues; multivariate analyses
  • Apply advanced statistical modeling estimating causal effect (e.g., propensity score matching, difference in differences, regression discontinuity design, causal mediation analysis)
  • Conducting cost-effectiveness analysis and return on investment (ROI) to evaluate the economic impact of community-engaged interventions
  • Support and co-author scientific manuscripts, including designing and conducting the statistical analyses, generating publishable results, interpreting, and discussing the findings

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Educational Administration, Statistics, Economics or Research Methodology; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Master's in Statistics or related discipline, including Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a social science field with a quantitative research emphasis;
  • Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in demonstrated advanced data management and analysis and statistical training (biostatistical and econometric methods in SAS, Stata, SPSS);
  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple community partners, state health department, and research partnerships.
  • The job requires:
  • Experience outside of coursework proposing research designs, methodological approaches, and running advanced statistical methods, including causal inference and quasi-experimental models, including propensity score and matching methods
  • Experience outside of coursework applying commonly used methods estimating causal effects (e.g., propensity score matching, difference in differences, regression discontinuity design, causal mediation analysis).
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience outside coursework with causal inference from observational data (e.g., the counterfactual theory of causation, the potential outcomes framework, structural equations, and directed acyclic graphs)
  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing at least 2 years of post-bachelor’s degree work, such as a Master's in Statistics, Economics, Epidemiology, Research Methodology; or other related degree.
  • Demonstrated advanced data management and analysis and statistical training (biostatistical and econometric methods in SAS, Stata, SPSS)
  • Experience with complex linked data structures, including Medicaid claims, Vital Statistics, other administrative health data sources and working with complex linked data structures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to five years after graduation of related and progressively more responsible or expansive research work, experience in research design, statistical methods and knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Expertise in maternal and child health and health equity research and evaluation
  • Ability to work independently, strong reporting skills for reports and publications, effectively communicate and collaborate in a team environment
  • Experience working in collaboration with multiple community partners, state health department, and research partnerships
