Software Engineer
Division: Weir Minerals - NETE

Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Software Engineer in the Ship Survivability team.  This permanent full-time position is based in Halifax (NS) at the Naval Dockyard with teleworking possibilities. Weir operates and manages the Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE), a Department of National Defence (DND) facility located in Montreal with detachments in Halifax, Victoria and Ottawa/Gatineau. Our team of experts support the Royal Canadian Navy and DND with test and evaluation services in a wide variety of technical areas.

Key Responsibilities
•    Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture.
•    Evaluation and validation of shipboard equipment performance and compliance to military requirements for the shore-based naval electronic system test ranges;
•    Support current team of engineers/programmers with system integration and enhancements to current test range hardware/software suite of tools;
•    Develop and improve Graphical User Interfaces and test equipment automation;
•    Investigate technical problems with end users and develop custom solutions;
•    Test and validate software product with simulated and real hardware signals, including test equipment and ship equipment; and
•    Draft technical documentation such as Specifications, User manual & Test plan.

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications: 
•    Knowledge of classic (C++, Python) and visual programming languages (LabVIEW);
•    Knowledge of computer hardware interfaces (GPIB, RS-232, USB, Ethernet, etc.);
•    System and test equipment integration (hardware/software);
•    Excellent organizational skills with attention to details and quality;
•    Ability to work as a member of a team;
•    Proficient technical writing in English and ability to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients; and
•    General office tools skills (Windows, Excel, Word, Visio).


Desirable Knowledge:
Naval ship electronic technology including communications, navigation, electronic warfare (ECM & ESM), or interested by.


Education/Experience:
•    Diploma or Bachelor degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent);
•    3 years min. related experience preferably in a Testing environment including exposure to instrumentation and/or LabVIEW.


Certifications, Licenses, Registrations, Special Skills: 
•    Eligible to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which requires Canadian citizenship and 10 years of residence in Canada (MANDATORY). 
•    Work Environment:

•    Occasionally required to perform work outside or onboard ships;
•    Occasional short duration travel to other test locations in Canada;
