Job description

As our Regulatory Affairs Specialist, you will be joining our Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) team and will be working closely with the Research and Development, Marketing, Operations and Sales groups. You will be responsible for leading the regulatory compliance aspects of the assigned operation in order to meet both governmental as well as customer requirements.

Responsibilities you can look forward to:

  • Prepare registration dossiers for government agencies.
  • Closely monitor evolving regulatory changes and communicate it across the Hempel organization.
  • Coordinate with Administration, Production, Sales Management Advertising and Information Systems to maintain conformity with federal, state and local regulations specific to:
  • Product compliance (VOC/HAP for local, state and federal).
  • Hazard communications (including in-lab).
  • Labelling
  • Coordinate annual reporting such as Rule 314 Annual Quantity and Emissions Report (AQER) for Architectural Coatings; AIM individual state reporting & Rule 1143 Consumer Paint Thinners & Multi-Purpose Solvents Annual Quantity & Emission Report.
  • Work with Information Systems to monitor, create and modify as required, and maintain software and programs, records and network connections needed to facilitate laboratory activities related to regulatory.

Maintain raw material code system. Including but not limited to:

  • Accessing the hazard risk of new raw materials.
  • Assuring the raw material SDS is available per OSHA requirements.
  • Entering new codes and updates into the necessary computer databases and/or computer systems.
  • Review and update exposure limits.
  • Monitor production for VOC compliance. Record and track all exceptions, calculate exceedance fees and report, as required. (National VOC Emissions Standards for Architectural Coatings or AIM).
  • Review information resources (including electronic resources) regularly for regulatory changes. Report and apply as necessary.
  • Work with marketing to support the development of new labels (back panels) and develop label changes, as required by the print shop.
  • Maintain internal health hazard data file (SDS) for both products and raw materials.
  • Function as a point of contact for SDS related questions from customers.
  • Maintain label warning files (electronic).

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or toxicology or engineering.
  • 5 years of laboratory experience in the coatings industry.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office proficiency.
  • Independent research and project management capabilities.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Open to traveling up to 25% of the time to Houston and Dallas locations.
  • Thrives and feels at ease in a fully remote work setting.

Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Proficient in English and Spanish.
  • Understanding of U.S. FDA food contact legislation.
  • Knowledge of Mexico Labelling/Marking Requirement, CARB, SCAQMD, EPA, TSCA & DSL regulations.
