Job description

How many people can answer the question, "What do you do for a living?" with the answer, "I help find cures for cancer." At LLS, employees take our mission seriously. Whether you work in one of our regions, are an accountant at the national office or a specialist in our Information Resource Center, you work each day on making our mission a reality: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Join us and give new meaning to the word, "job."

Summary: As support staff for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Office of Public Policy (OPP), the Coordinator, Grassroots & Operations is responsible for coordinating OPP’s day-to-day department operations and for helping to implement the grassroots organizing strategies and tactics that are fundamental to advancing the organization’s policy agenda. That agenda is laser-focused on ensuring that patients with blood cancer are able to get the care they need, when they need it – including those patients who too often fall through the cracks of our country’s complicated healthcare system.

This is an entry-level position that offers a meaningful opportunity to help advance an important mission while learning the mechanics of both grassroots advocacy and non-profit business operations. The right candidate will be not only organized and detail-oriented; also critical is an interest in healthcare and a sense of commitment to improving the lives of patients and their families.

As a valued member of LLS, you are eligible for a comprehensive benefits package. Our offerings include medical, dental, and vision insurance; life insurance; flexible spending accounts; a 403b retirement plan along with generous paid time off. In addition, we observe federal paid holidays throughout the year, and offer a wellness program and an employee assistance program.

While employees may be permitted to work remotely, travel to the assigned office, HUB or Satellite Offices may be required as determined by the employee’s manager and the employee’s People Organization Generalist.

Duties And Responsibilities

Grassroots Organizing (roughly 50% effort)

  • Identify patient story leads by reviewing messages from volunteer advocates (e.g., social media posts and direct messages, emails, online submissions), cataloging the details of those stories, and delivering promising leads to OPP’s grassroots organizers
  • Manage volunteer advocate profiles on LLS’s volunteer management platform. To include creating profiles for new advocates and working with advocates to ensure that their profiles are complete and that volunteers remain compliant with their training requirements
  • Facilitate OPP’s participation in the LLS Volunteer Engagement (VE) department’s internship program. To include communicating program requirements to OPP colleagues, submitting OPP’s intern requests to the VE team, and ensuring OPP compliance with program reporting requirements
  • Assist with designing and executing virtual and/or in-person events involving LLS’s grassroots advocacy program, e.g., lobby days, advocate trainings, and volunteer committee meetings
  • Assist OPP’s grassroots organizers with the production of digital advocacy communications, e.g., action alerts (i.e., email blasts) and/or text messages asking volunteer advocates to contact their elected officials
  • Coordinate responses to emails received by OPP’s public-facing inbox
  • Facilitate the cross-departmental process of connecting advocacy volunteers with recognition and engagement opportunities as they arise over the course of the year, e.g., opportunities to participate in Congress’s peer-reviewed research program or in interviews with the media

Business Operations (roughly 50% effort)

  • Process OPP’s expense invoices, working closely with LLS’s Mission Operations team and with OPP colleagues to ensure that expense coding is accurate and processing is on-time
  • Help develop and maintain tools used across OPP to plan and manage campaign budgets
  • Support the head of OPP’s federal government affairs team and the Mission Operations team in ensuring timely collection and filing of Lobbying Disclosure Act reports
  • Develop and maintain OPP’s grants tracker, ensuring that OPP staff responsible for each grant remain aware of deadlines, reporting requirements, and incoming grants
  • Receive visitors when they arrive at the OPP office in Washington, DC and facilitate occasional use of the office by LLS staff from other departments
  • Serve as LLS’s point of contact for building management
  • Maintain stock of kitchen and office supplies
  • Ensure that the office is generally in order, including by monitoring cleaning performed by building staff. Coordinate solutions if/when problems arise
  • Monitor tech equipment in the office (e.g., copier, video, and telephone conferencing). Coordinate solutions if/when problems arise, and serve as OPP’s liaison to LLS IT on other department-level issues if/when needed
