Job Overview

We are actively seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Retention Specialist & Academic Advisor to become a vital member of our team. In this remote role, you will play a crucial part in guiding students through their academic experiences, from orientation to graduation, ensuring they meet their educational aspirations. Your expertise in academic advising and support will be instrumental in enhancing student success and retention. Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver tailored academic advising to undergraduate students, assisting them in course selection, tracking degree requirements, and uncovering academic opportunities.
  • Aid students in comprehending university policies, submitting curriculum petitions, and discovering innovative pathways to achieve their degrees.
  • Conduct individual meetings each semester with students to facilitate their academic planning, career aspirations, and long-term goals.
  • Collaborate with various academic departments and student services to provide holistic support to every student.
  • Lead Early Access Registration and Pathways appointments, guiding prospective and incoming students through university programs and options.
  • Maintain accuracy of student information in university systems by partnering closely with the Registrar's Office and other administrative teams.
  • Contribute to the continuous enhancement of advising resources, including the Student Handbook and University Course Catalog.
  • Engage in campus events, professional conferences, and staff training to remain informed about best practices in academic advising.

Required Skills

  • A strong dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse community, actively participating in professional development related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI).
  • Comprehensive understanding of developmental psychology and a student-centered approach to advising.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail, capable of managing multiple tasks and tracking critical information.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to cultivate positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Familiarity with academic advising strategies and best practices for student retention.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), with basic numeracy skills to monitor student data and performance.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Preferred: Master's degree in education, counseling, or a related discipline, with a keen interest in contemplative education.
  • Experience: 1 to 2 years of professional experience in academic advising, student retention, or a similar field. In the absence of a bachelor's degree, 4 to 8 years of relevant experience will be considered.
