Job description

Overview
The Last Mile, an Oakland, CA-based non-profit, is the first prison program in the U.S. to provide in-prison software engineering training.
Our mission is to provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for justice-involved individuals through education and technology training. The Last Mile prepares students for employment as full-stack web developers post-release, teaching HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node, MongoDB, React, and more.

By joining The Last Mile, you will be part of a mission-driven team focused on transforming lives and creating opportunities for justice-impacted individuals. This is a unique opportunity to help build and grow our social media presence while directly contributing to the success of our mission.

Position Overview

The Social Media Marketing Coordinator will be responsible for monitoring and managing The Last Mile's social media channels, ensuring all communication aligns with the organization’s mission, values, and language guidelines. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and passionate about social media trends. This role focuses on engaging with our online community, fostering long-term relationships, and increasing subscribers to our channels and newsletters.

There is potential for this part-time role to transition into a full-time position, with expanded responsibilities that may include managing social media for a major celebrity brand ambassador for The Last Mile. This is an opportunity for a driven individual to grow within a dynamic, mission-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Social Media Monitoring & Engagement
    • Monitor and manage comments and direct messages across all social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
    • Respond to messages and comments in a timely, professional manner, ensuring that all communications adhere to The Last Mile’s language and messaging guidelines.
    • Successfully transition social media engagements into long-term relationships by fostering continued interaction, encouraging subscribers to follow our channels, newsletters, and other digital platforms.
    • Stay highly organized by tracking all interactions and following up where necessary to ensure no engagement opportunities are missed.

  • Trend Analysis & Strategic Innovation
    • Track emerging social media trends, and continuously push the marketing department to explore innovative strategies, new platforms, and content opportunities.
    • Be proactive in suggesting and implementing social media campaigns that align with current trends, audience behaviors, and platform algorithms to maximize engagement.
    • Identify areas for growth in social media reach and brand visibility, particularly for The Last Mile’s mission and sub-brands.

  • Social Media Analytics
    • Track social media performance metrics (e.g., engagement rates, click-throughs, follower growth), analyze the data, and make informed suggestions on how to optimize content and engagement strategies.
    • Generate regular reports on social media activity and success, providing insights to inform future strategies.
    • Use data to optimize content performance and ensure that engagement metrics continue to grow.

  • Communication Management
    • Ensure all communications on social platforms follow the agreed-upon language and tone of the organization.
    • Communicate The Last Mile’s mission consistently while fostering a sense of community and engagement among followers.
    • Coordinate with the marketing and communications teams to ensure seamless and aligned messaging across all social media platforms.

Qualifications

  • Passion for social media and a deep understanding of current social media trends, algorithms, and best practices.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail, especially in tracking and managing communications across multiple platforms.
  • Proven experience in social media management or community engagement.
  • Strong written communication skills, with an emphasis on maintaining brand consistency and tone.
  • Ability to think strategically and identify trends that can be leveraged to enhance social media engagement.
  • Familiarity with social media management tools like Meltwater, Hootsuite, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Interest in or experience with criminal justice reform or social impact programs is highly desirable.

Additional Skills

  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple social media accounts and ensure no engagement is missed.
  • Proactive and innovative, constantly seeking out new ways to engage with audiences and improve social media performance.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Passionate about social trends, eager to experiment with new content strategies.
  • Excited to grow within an organization that makes a meaningful impact in the lives of justice-impacted individuals.
