The University of Texas Austin Enterprise Technology department is dedicated to advancing the University’s digital ecosystem to empower the Longhorn community to learn, discover, and succeed. We are seeking a dynamic and creative Digital Communication Specialist to join our team and help us enhance our online presence and engagement.

This role works in close collaboration with the Director of Operations, who is responsible for digital communications strategy. They maintain productive working relationships with the Enterprise Technology operations team and senior leadership team, and central Marketing & Communication teams and relevant administrative units across campus. Work is conducted in a collaborative environment with multi-dimensional points of view, requiring sound judgment and consultative skills. The incumbent provides client service with professionalism and diplomacy when dealing with faculty, staff and senior leadership within the university.

The incumbent must be able to make informed decisions with political acuity and be cognizant of broader accountability in a role representative of the Enterprise Technology.  They can take initiative where minimal direction is provided and are proactive in contributing ideas and solutions to the team. The incumbent will use sound judgement and discretion in making content decisions (often under tight time pressure) on behalf of Enterprise Technology and they recognize when an issue needs escalation to senior colleagues.

Flexible work arrangements are available for this position, including the ability to work 100% remotely. Remote work for individuals who reside outside Texas but within the United States and its territories will be considered and requires Central Office approval.

This position provides life/work balance with typically a 40-hour work week.

Purpose

The Digital Communication Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing our digital communication strategies. This role involves creating compelling content, managing social media channels, analyzing performance metrics, and ensuring consistent and effective communication across all digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with a passion for digital media and a keen eye for detail.

Responsibilities

Web Content Management and Quality Assurance:
  • Maintain and support websites and web content strategies on the Enterprise Technology website and departmental/unit websites as needed, with special attention to accessibility standards, user experience, University of Texas at Austin brand and style best practices.
  • Coordinates publishing new content and updating existing content as needed, including events, news, and announcements on the Enterprise Technology website and department websites.
  • Provide web support, training, guidance and resources to departmental web representatives, including trouble shooting and escalating problems.
  • Provide web support and strategy recommendations to the Enterprise Technology leadership team.
  • Support development of new websites or website overhauls in the CIO portfolio, including content strategy recommendations and solutions.
  • Ability to write technical items to non-technical audience, create written website content, and update accordingly.

Event and Leadership Communication
  • Managing and planning portions of event materials including invite content and overview, run of show, registration and any preparation research or documentation for the speaker or guests. 
  • Collaborates in preparing speaker notes and event scenario documents; create slides as needed.
  • Attend events as content manager and gathering digital collateral for future events, newsletters, and other communications.
  • Post-event video editing and caption correction.
  • Create communication pieces on behalf of the CIO/Enterprise Technology and/or edit communication on behalf of the CIO/Enterprise Technology.
  • Edit and publish CIO updates monthly, create and maintain monthly Enterprise Technology newsletter, and create assist with other Enterprise Technology ongoing communication pieces.

Social Media Planning, Content Creation, and Management
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, deliver and evaluate content for social media platforms.
  • Manage Enterprise Technology social media platforms and properties, including collaborating on a comprehensive social media strategy and developing campaigns with other university communicators and stakeholders.
  • Create, edit, and schedule social media related content in partnership with the projects,
  • Develop visual assets (e.g. photography, video) for social media.
  • Develop and manage the social media content calendar and work in collaboration with partners to ensure content reflects and supports our Enterprise Technology & CIO Portfolio key initiatives/campaigns.
  • Employ a listening strategy to source leads for content, identify emerging issues, and engage with the IT community and beyond.

Digital Media Content Creation
  • Design and create content for social media, web and digital screens, including copywriting and design.
  • Ensure excellence and consistency in social media and digital communications, including voice, branding, accessibility and user experience best practices.
  • Manage and contribute to a library of shared content, include photos and templates.

Analytics and Reporting
  • Monitor, maintain and improve social media and website analytics dashboards to inform strategy and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Create analytics reports as needed for Enterprise Technology stakeholders (e.g. for department newsletters and campaigns).
  • Conduct environmental scans and competitive analyses to inform improvements and strategy.

Additional Duties as required

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in marketing and digital communications, online journalism, public relations, corporate communications or equivalent and/or relevant combination of education and experience.
    • 5+ years professional experience in creating and editing content for the web and social media.
    • 5+ years of social media and website management experience.
    • Proven experience with a strong portfolio showcasing excellent written skills.
    • Exceptional command written language, including grammar, punctuation, and style.
    • Ability to write clear, concise and engaging content for diverse audiences.
    • Skilled designer experienced with creative design software, videography/editing, photography and digital content creation.
    • Event communication planning
    • Project management and campaign planning an asset.

    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Strong written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas, including developing stories, social media posts, and website content.
    • Experience with website management within a Content Management System CMS (e.g. Drupal, WordPress)
    •  In-depth knowledge and understanding of online communities and social media platforms, preferably in higher education.
    • Familiar with social media management platforms would be considered an asset.
    • Proven understanding of and commitment to user experience and accessibility requirements for web and social media.
    • Familiarity with audience groups including undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, faculty, staff and external partners/stakeholders
    • Event logistics and organizational skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proven interpersonal skills and responsive client service, including building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and digital communications colleagues.
    • Strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork, and a consultative approach.
    • Strong organizational skills to balance multiple projects with urgent requests, sometimes under tight deadlines.
    • High level of attention to detail and ability to work in multi-tasking manner.

    Salary Range

    $60,000 + depending on qualifications

    Work Shift

    Monday - Friday 8am-5pm, flexible. Occasional overtime nights and/or weekends may be required.
