Conservation Land Negotiator

Position Details: Full-time, Permanent, New Position
Salary Range: $53,500 - $66,900. Salary is based on a 35-hour work week. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s education and/or experience as it relates to the position.
Location: Remote/hybrid in Southern Alberta, with preference to be located near the Strathmore office.

What You Will Do

As a Conservation Land Negotiator, you will work as a key member of DUC’s Alberta operations and the Restoration and Retention team. Your primary responsibility will be working with landowners and producers in delivering our habitat programs at the farm gate.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

• Generate landowner interest in DUC programs via cold calling, targeted communications, attending rural municipality meetings and building relationships in your target area.
• Steward relationships and work closely with private landowners, agribusiness, wildlife communities and government organizations. 
• Work closely with DUC colleagues to share information and promote all aspects of DUC’s business.
• Managing numerous ongoing project negotiations and being able to effectively track deadlines and monitor progress.
• Assess land’s waterfowl and wildlife value based on satellite imagery and onsite inspections, including basic GIS logging, identifying wetland types, vegetation species, and rangeland health.
• Keep up to date logs of interactions with landowners and potential clients and develop detailed project proposal packages. See clients through signing agreements and finalizing projects.

Your minimum 3 years’ experience and knowledge of waterfowl ecology, Alberta agriculture and landowner negotiations make you the ideal candidate for the position.

Requirements

• A post-secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Land Management or related discipline; relevant work experience will also be considered.
• Knowledge of working farms and practices, annual crop and forage/grazing production systems.
• Excellent organization, interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written.
• Strong computer and analytical skills
• Comfortable working alone in rural settings under minimal supervision. 
• Experience in planning and project management. 
• Experience with various outdoor equipment including GPS, ATV’s, Boats etc.

Assets

• Previous sales or cold-calling experience 
• Knowledge of waterfowl, animal and plant biology or sustainable resource management
• Familiarity with the non-profit and/or environmental conservation sectors
