Job Description Summary:

Assembles financial, workforce, economic, statistical, or other operational data sets to perform comparative and predictive analyses of business issues. Performs standard business analyses using a variety of tools and techniques, e.g. statistical analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling, data mining, data storage, data automation, and data visualization. Provides advice on functional capabilities of data analytic tools and platforms. Trains users of the data analytic tools and platforms. Ensures data integrity of data elements in data analytic tools and platforms through regular audits. Generates regular and special reports. Participates in implementing or developing tools and platforms to capture business operation information. Assists with developing, analyzing, testing, modifying and documenting data preparation and data validation processes.

Applies specific professional-level functional knowledge to solve problems requiring the identification and analysis of moderate to complex variables. Uses prescribed guidelines or policies to analyze and resolve problems that routinely arise in areas of assigned responsibility, but may receive guidance or expertise from higher-level staff on more complex problems. Establishes processes and/or procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of assigned functions. Trains, mentors, and serves as a resource in own discipline to others.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Note: Duties may be performed solely for a specific business or functional area or a combination of areas. 

1. Extracts and analyzes various data through a range of data preparation, modeling, analysis and/or visualization techniques, which may include statistical analysis, predictive modeling and pattern recognition. Uses information to produce understanding and insights into business and operational functional areas.

2. Develops visualization tools for reporting. Creates data visualization mock-ups and business intelligence platform-based prototypes that reflect the appropriate context to inform decision-making.

3. Supports the release of periodic dashboards at the institution and division level.  Works collaboratively to gather and reconstruct data, downloads and prepares data from source systems, and suggests enhancements to dashboard design.  Administers data validation process ensuring data integrity of the architecture and formulas within Tableau and other tools and platforms. Ensures staff have access to real-time, easy-to-understand information on the dashboards.                                                                                

4. Supports data model, data storage and data automation processes by running queries, extracting data, and performing testing and validation of the data model. Provides support on the organization and structure of data from different platforms and/or data in different tables.

5. Identify and resolves data quality issues for assigned data assets.  Develops, modifies, and tests queries to ensure data integrity.

6. Prepares ad hoc and regular summary reports and dashboards in supported business area, ensuring integrity of information. Resolves production issues with extracts and dashboards.

7. Produces presentations, briefings, and reports. Contributes to technical papers or summaries, reports, and briefings.

8. Leads and/or participates in the implementation of methods and procedures that will increase efficiency and accuracy of data analytic platforms, data structures, and data assets.   

9. Works directly with staff to identify analytical requirements.  Advises on functional capabilities of data analytic platforms, appropriate data structures and models, data preparation, and data source connection issues.

10. Creates user documentation and training materials and trains end users.  Troubleshoots user problems and implements solutions. 

11. Researches best practices in data analytics and techniques and recommends improvement to data management

12. Maintains an appropriate standard of confidentiality.  When handling secure, privileged, sensitive, or confidential information and matters, maintains strict confidence and exercises care to prevent disclosure to others.  Accesses confidential information for work-related reasons only, following the policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures that any privileged, sensitive, or confidential information is securely stored, disposed of, and transmitted according to the Institutional guidance. 

13. May develop, analyze, test, modify, standardize and documents data management practices and processes.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • In depth knowledge in one or multiple data analytical tools, platforms, and visualization software (e.g. Tableau, Google Analytics, budgeting and forecasting tools, ERP/CRM systems such as Workday).

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

  • Expertise in query tools, modeling, and data analysis. 

  • Excellent customer service & troubleshooting skills. 

  • Excellent attention to detail. 

  • Ability to solve intellectual problems of some variety and complexity. 

  • Ability to manage and maintain privileged, sensitive, and confidential information and matters appropriately. 

  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced office environment during peak periods. 

  • Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. 

  • Ability to operate with appreciable latitude for independent judgement and action. 

  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment. 

  • Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments. 

  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience:  Two years of related professional experience. 

Physical Capabilities:  Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Reports to Manager. Sets objectives with supervisor.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $70,880 - $88,600. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.   This position is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment:  This role has been approved for 100% remote status, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
