Job description

Job Description Summary:
The incumbent will work with teams of scientists and engineers in the Hydrometeorology Applications Program (HAP) of the NSF NCAR Research Applications Laboratory to conduct science and help lead research projects related to weather modification, as well as applied to cloud microphysics, aerosol-cloud interactions, and hydrologic applications. They will provide leadership and coordination for cloud-seeding field programs and program development for the weather modification research group.

Research responsibilities include developing and maintaining technical expertise in areas of cloud physics and applying this expertise to model and code development related to cloud seeding models, analyzing observational and model results, leading project teams, writing proposals, and communicating scientific results in both oral and written forms by presenting papers at national and international scientific meetings and by publishing papers in scientific journals.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

  • Work with scientists and engineers in a leadership role to produce high-quality and high-impact research.    This includes:

    • Conducting high-quality basic and applied research related to cloud microphysics, weather modification, aerosol-cloud interactions, and hydrologic applications. Participating in and helping guide model simulations and analysis of project data. Leading scientists and engineers on project deliverables related to cloud seeding projects.

    • Creating and executing experimental designs for cloud-seeding field programs and coordinating field program participants from multiple organizations. Managing data collection efforts and computing needs for field programs and numerical model simulations. Evaluating the performance of weather prediction model results compared to field project observations.

    • Working with sponsors to define project goals, milestones, and deliverables. Evaluating progress and results of these projects and formulating changes to achieve objectives. Overseeing and reviewing project deliverables and communicating with sponsors. Assisting in developing or contributing to the development of proposals for outside funding; serving as Co-P.I. when appropriate

    • Preparing scientific research, presenting results, and writing project reports as required by projects. Communicating research results through journal articles, oral presentations, and posters. Engaging in public education and outreach as needed

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:

Education & Experience REQUIRED:

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric science, meteorology, or a closely related field AND at least 3 years of experience in numerical weather prediction, cloud seeding and/or cloud-aerosol interactions, observational and model data analysis

Education & Experience Desired but Not Required:

  • Experience collaborating with national and international groups

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:

  •  Advanced knowledge of cloud microphysics, aerosol-cloud interactions, and dynamics

  • Advanced knowledge of cloud seeding principles and research, evaluation methods, numerical modeling, and/or operational programs

  • Advanced knowledge of numerical models and physical parameterizations in NWP models (e.g., WRF)

  • Proficiency with high-performance computing environment; Advanced skill in operational and real-time systems and associated issues

  • Advanced skill in processing large datasets in a variety of different data formats and applying statistics to meteorological analysis

  • Demonstrated programming skills in data analysis software packages (e.g., Python, NCL, NCO, MATLAB, and R, etc.)

  • Knowledge of instrumentation and data analysis techniques for aircraft in-situ probes, soundings, radars, and other observational platforms

  • Ability to work effectively and with limited guidance in a collaborative environment with scientists, engineers, and stakeholders

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills demonstrated by a record of presenting scientific information through papers and reports, oral presentations, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks and projects on schedule with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated skill as a technical leader in projects

  • Ability to manage people and projects, including developing and executing a project plan

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired but Not Required:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in one or more areas of research conducted in RAL beyond the weather modification research group

  • Knowledge of machine learning methods and how they can be applied to Earth System problems

  • Ability and willingness to contribute to program development efforts, including initiating research ideas and writing proposals
