BLN24 is looking for a highly skilled Senior System Engineer to join our team.

About the Role:
The Senior System Engineer will lead the design, development, and integration of complex systems in support of critical development efforts for the U.S. Census Bureau’s Self-Response Quality Assurance Support Services. This includes prototyping, testing, and maintaining high-performance solutions in a multi-disciplinary environment, with a strong emphasis on AI/ML integration, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and data integrity. The Senior System Engineer will guide technical teams through implementation while optimizing workflows, supporting ML/Ops pipelines, and managing data flows across the system to ensure scalability, security, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, prototyping, development, testing, and integration of complex, scalable information systems, ensuring smooth operation within AWS Cloud environments.
  • Develop and implement functional and technical designs for information systems, leveraging AWS services such as ELB, S3, RDS, Serverless infrastructure, Elastic Beanstalk, and CloudFormation.
  • Supervise or lead cross-functional teams in software design, system integration, coding, testing, and troubleshooting, with a focus on implementing AWS Machine Learning Services (e.g., Amazon SageMaker, AWS Glue, AWS Step Functions).
  • Design and manage scalable ML/Ops pipelines, integrating machine learning models with broader system architectures and ensuring efficient data processing and orchestration across services.
  • Oversee the design and management of data pipelines using AWS tools such as AWS Glue, Kinesis, Redshift, and Athena, ensuring proper system inputs and outputs while maintaining data integrity and performance.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders (both technical and non-technical) to evaluate system business processes, identify areas for improvement, and recommend efficient, cloud-optimized solutions.
  • Lead the deployment of machine learning models, leveraging Amazon SageMaker to optimize system performance for specific AI/ML use cases.
  • Implement infrastructure-as-code (IaC) strategies using AWS CloudFormation or Terraform, ensuring system scalability, disaster recovery, and cost optimization.
  • Create and maintain system documentation, including design documents, user manuals, and training materials for both developers and end-users.
  • Conduct quality reviews, ensuring system deliverables comply with AWS Well-Architected Framework and industry standard best security practices.
  • Perform workflow analyses to optimize system efficiency and resource usage within AWS environments, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and support to junior engineers, ensuring high-quality development efforts and adherence to project timelines.
  • Design and manage project work plans, timelines, and resource allocation to ensure successful delivery of high-quality system implementations.

Required Skills/Abilities & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in system architecture, design, and implementation, including infrastructure, software development, and data processing.
  • Extensive experience with AWS Cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, with expertise in automation, data manipulation, and system integration.
  • Hands-on experience in virtualization and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, EKS).
  • Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent, with experience managing impactful dashboards and reports.
  • Expertise in managing data pipelines using AWS Glue, Kinesis, and Redshift, including designing, developing, and optimizing secure and scalable data flows.
  • Experience in building, deploying, and managing ML models using Amazon SageMaker or similar ML services, and integrating models into production systems.
  • Strong understanding of security best practices in AWS, including IAM, VPC security, encryption (KMS).
  • Proven ability to support road-mapping, perform workflow analysis, and implement system improvements.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams, collaborating with project managers, stakeholders, and junior engineers to deliver timely, high-quality solutions.
  • Strong communication skills to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with NIST guidelines and experience with large-scale IT infrastructure is highly desirable.

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience working with federal government agency system implementations.
  • Knowledge of federal security compliance (e.g., FedRAMP, FISMA).
  • Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or relevant cloud certifications.
