Your Manager: Controls & Automation Manager

Team: Engineering

Location: Dumbarton – this role will be mostly site based with some flexibility for remote working around business needs

Your new team

This position sits in our Chivas Brothers business. At Chivas Brothers, our 1,600-strong team across 27 sites is committed to upholding the heritage of Scotch and ensuring its sustainable future, as well as opening it up to new audiences across the globe.

The scope of Operations stretches from Procurement through conversion (distillation and maturation) and manufacturing (or bottling) to all the downstream Supply Chain activities until the final product is delivered.  In addition, Operations play a very active role in Innovation, Talent Development and Operational Risk Management.

The Engineering department provides innovative solutions to Manufacturing projects or issues with the Controls and Automation team focusing specifically on Software and Systems projects within the Operational Technology (OT) space.

Your unique contribution

You will have four main areas of responsibility:

  • Project Execution and Delivery – Managing CAPEX and continuous improvement projects including multi-disciplined teams and any associated contract resource functions.  You will assume responsibility for all aspects from securing of funds through to commissioning and handover.  Also ensure that new systems or ways of working are pro-actively sought and developed to improve the project execution process and ensure they are implemented across all Manufacturing project functions.
  • Technical Support and Advice – Providing technical assistance relating to all OT systems across Manufacturing. Provide the relevant training and upskilling to maintenance engineering department and other operations teams to ensure that production is maximized. You will provide advice to engineering and operations managers on new or modified installations to ensure a consistency of approach.
  • Systems Development - Specify, design, procure and supervise the installation of software solutions working alongside the Automation Engineers to fully integrate solutions across Manufacturing. You will provide a framework for software upgrades (both developed internally as well as vendor solutions).
  • Safety and Policies – Proactively manage safety to company, group and national standards.  You will also support the implementation of Manufacturing Control and Automation policies and drive compliance with group and company-wide Control System policies and procedures.

Who you’ll be working with

Internally, you will work closely with the wider Engineering team, Manufacturing teams along with other business functions such as Global Tech, Procurement and Production.

Externally, you will manage contract resource and work with vendors to ensure delivery of project to the highest standard.

Your blend of talent

This position could be right for you if you:

  • Have a degree in computer science/software engineering (or equivalent experience in software & systems development), along with a full current UK driving license.
  • Have experience in developing software solutions in an operational or business environment with a working understanding of software/digital tools such as performance dashboards, collaboration tools, quality data management.
  • Are proficient in object-orientated programming, have a working knowledge of relational databases and experience of full software life-cycles. Awareness of servers, data communications, networking infrastructure and switching.
  • Are experienced in Project Management and managing software development using AGILE methodology.
  • Are experienced in management of software contracts with external vendors. Experience of management of contractors and in-house resource to deliver projects.
