Job description

Position Overview

You will be responsible for overseeing the visitor and resource protection program at Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot National Monuments. Reporting directly to the Chief Ranger/SLEO, you will collaborate closely with the MOCA/TUZI Superintendent and supervise a Protection Ranger along with any seasonal or volunteer staff. A home-to-work vehicle may be authorized if you reside within a 20-minute response time.

Duties And Responsibilities

Law Enforcement

  • Perform a full range of law enforcement duties, including detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws.
  • Manage and conduct enforcement of criminal laws ensuring park resource protection and visitor safety.
  • Develop relationships with local law enforcement, fire, and search and rescue (SAR) agencies.
  • Maintain local VRP Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and plans, including Physical Security and Emergency Operations plans.

Program Management

  • Provide oversight to the visitor and resource protection program.
  • Collaborate with the Monument Superintendent to develop long-term visions and annual work plans for direct reports.
  • Draft, submit, and execute the annual operating budget.

Human Resource Management/Supervision

  • Oversee human resource management activities for staff, including performance evaluations and training plans.
  • Advise on promotions, assignments, awards, and disciplinary actions.

Visitor and Resource Protection

  • Direct and supervise active patrols to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Enforce applicable laws and coordinate felony and misdemeanor arrests.
  • Manage emergency preparedness and response capabilities, including search and rescue operations.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must possess a Type I Law Enforcement Commission or equivalent.
  • Must pass physical and drug tests, and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.

Qualifications

Selective Factors

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Type I National Park Service Law Enforcement Commission.
  • Must obtain certification as a National Registry Emergency Medical Responder/Technician within the first year of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience comparable to the GS/GL-09 grade level or three years of graduate-level study in relevant fields.
