We are seeking a highly motivated Surgical Coding SME to take on a leadership role and support our Surgical Specialties team.


The Surgical Coding SME is responsible for coordination, planning and education of newly hired coders as well as supporting on-going education to existing coding staff. The individual in this position will work closely with Coding Services Management to identify and resolve problems related to coding, documentation and/or education. The SME is expected to have expertise in their coding specialties, as they are to provide extensive education regarding any changes to ICD 10 and CPT to coding staff in adherence to regulatory guidelines that is pertinent to their assigned areas. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other internal CU Medicine Departments. The SME is also responsible for coding analysis, feedback and education.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a coding expert for assigned specialties.
  • Provide training and education to new and existing coders in conjunction with the Coding Services (CS) Trainer and ACE team.
  • Monitor quality of coding staff as directed by Coding Services Management.
  • Collaborate with ACE and CS Trainer to develop monthly presentations in regards to educational round tables for targeted specialty areas and coding groups.
  • Assist in researching coder questions and provide guidance for unlisted code requests.
  • Approve charge correction requests and provide education/feedback.
  • Analyze and research correct coding for new CPT codes and make recommendations to ensure compliant coding of existing procedures.
  • Identify provider education opportunities and coordinate with ACE for education.
  • Perform edit analysis to identify educational opportunities and edit modification.
  • Participate in optimizing work flows to support process improvement and identify additional/ongoing training needs.
  • Identify trends and work in tandem with management to enhance revenue cycle performance.
  • Collaborate with ARR and CU Medicine Liaisons to improve overall revenue cycle health.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of desk procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager &/or CU Medicine Leadership.


Requires 3-5 years of coding experience with demonstrated expertise in procedural and diagnosis coding. Knowledge/understanding of teaching physician guidelines is strongly preferred. CPC or equivalent AHIMA coding certification required; CPMA or other specialty certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to success. Must demonstrate strong computer and Microsoft Office software skills. EMR and Practice Management software experience is also a required competency. The ideal candidate will be proficient in reporting and analytics.
