Job description

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston is one of the world's most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. The primary purpose of the Data Scientist position is to design, develop, and manage predictive models, statistical models, and reusable data science solutions to help the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer make data-driven investment decisions and garner extramural funding to transform the research enterprise to support MD Anderson's strategic goals. Uses programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced analytics to analyze multiple data sources around research interests and output to identify synergistic, collaborative research opportunities and gaps in our research enterprise. Evaluates data science methods and procedures to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy. Plan data collection methods for projects. Train others in data science software and apply data science methods to query various research administration data sets.

Key Functions

Data Modeling (30%): Design, develop, configure, and manage reusable data science solutions and statistical models that can be applied to support decision making for scientific and administrative operations, analytics, and planning team science; Create computational models to identify trends and gaps. Independently solves problems using in depth knowledge of relevant internal and external databases, BI applications, and tools. Provides deep understanding of data management, database systems, and use of statistical tools and business reporting, including Excel and SQL to identify trends, opportunities, and data issues. Designs output visualizations and reports suitable for presentation to executive leadership

Data Analysis (30%): Independently analyze large amounts of information from disparate sources collected for research management and reporting to discover trends and patterns; Correlate similar data to find actionable outputs (collaborative opportunities and/or research investment); Predict and measure the accuracy of forecasts and predictions to continuously drive operational effectiveness; Evaluate the data science methods and procedures used to obtain data in order to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy; Identify relationships and trends in data, as well as any factors that could affect the results; Plan data collection methods for specific projects, and determine the types and sizes of sample groups to be used; Process large amounts of data for statistical modeling and graphic analysis, Produces high-quality reports and documentation by using distinguished software capabilities including spreadsheets and graphical presentation of complex data sets.

Dissemination of Information (25%): Create reports and presentations for business uses; Educate administrative teams on how to apply data science methods across various data sets. Provide training on data science / statistical software like Python, R, or other relevant platforms; Report and interpret results of statistical analyses, including information in the form of graphs, charts, and tables. Work closely with staff in the Office for Multi-Project Grant Development to ensure accurate depiction of data for large, institutional grant applications.

Teamwork (10%): Work collaboratively with data owners across the organization to collect and analyze data. Perform tasks efficiently and work together with teams to ensure project success. Effectively manages the relationships and interfaces with multiple departments by acting as a matrix manager with senior leadership and physician champions. Serves as a technical resource providing advice and counsel on business intelligence issues.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or related field.

Experience

Required: Three years experience in scientific software or industry development/analysis. With Master's degree, one years experience required. With PhD, no experience required.

Preferred

  • Minimum of five (5) or more years of relevant experience in data management, data integration, analysis, and project management within healthcare, research and/or academic environments.
  • Experience in data science solutions, data modeling, statistical analysis, application coding or programming, machine learning algorithms, data mining, or data visualization.
  • Ability to independently break down and understand complex business problems, define a solution, and implement it using advanced quantitative methods
  • Demonstrated good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with programming for data analysis.
  • Experience in academic environments is strongly preferred.
  • Consistently exhibits strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage complex information, assess problems, and develop effective solutions. Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals/analyses.
