Job description

Are you passionate about working in the lab with new and challenging technologies? And do you have a courage and curiosity to come up with new ideas and inspirations? Then you might be our new colleague at Hempel.

With our Double Impact strategy, our ambition is to double Hempel’s revenue by 2025 through both organic growth and mergers or acquisitions. Moreover, in Hempel we have ambitious sustainability goals and in order to meet those targets we need to develop coatings solutions with improved sustainability profile and differentiated value drivers for our customers. We are therefore looking for a dedicated person to initiate and run research projects towards stronger and more sustainable coating solutions.

“This is a position, where you can play a crucial role to provide the world with more sustainable coating solutions focusing on a complex problem of protection and prolonging lifetime of our customers’ assets. You will be working in a modern environment and at our brand new laboratory allowing to use your technical expertise in a global setting. Says Rifnur Latipov, Technology Centers Manager in R&D”

Here’s some of the other things you can look forward to
In this role you will be able to utilize your organic or polymer chemistry background to drive challenging research projects and keep expanding your expertise on a regular basis. Technical projects will be revolving around fundamental understanding of processes and structural changes taking place in coating films, especially waterborne coatings, and how that can be affected by compositional and chemical variations of raw materials used. The tasks and projects will be revolving around development of new technologies and raw materials, characterization methods based on fundamental understanding to help product development teams to significantly improve performance and sustainability profiles of new coating solutions. Thus, in this role you will be collaborating with our internal and external partners, such as R&D, sustainability and commercial organizations, suppliers and academia.

Your tasks will be to:

  • Design, plan, execute and report research projects using existing and new knowledge, methods and theories to solve problems.
  • Perform all required research and experimental work in the lab in order to meet the objectives of the projects.
  • Analyse and interpret data, prepare technical reports, and present findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay current with industry trends, sustainability trends in coating industry, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements to guide technology development strategies.
  • Effectively communicate with suppliers, research institutes and universities to expand our capabilities to solve specific technical challenges.
  • Follow all guidelines and Group procedures regarding Health, Safety and Environment.
  • Ensure that high standards of safety and 6S are maintained in Hempel facilities.

You will be based in Hempel’s office in Copenhagen, Denmark joining a dedicated R&D Technology Center team of 12 colleagues based in Copenhagen and Polinya (Spain).

The successful candidate

As a person, it is easy for you to come up with new ideas and you can apply your fundamental knowledge to solve applied problems. In your approach to your work, you are proactive and result driven. You can use your analytical skills and critical thinking to understand the root causes and design solutions based on that. We value collaboration and this is something that comes easy to you both with colleagues internally as well as external partners. That comes with a positive attitude and genuine care for the people around you without losing the focus on the end goal of our projects.

Moreover you have:

  • Organic or polymer chemistry background.
  • Experience working in a laboratory is essential.
  • An understanding of product sustainability, particularly carbon footprint, its root causes and the ability to design solutions that address them.
  • Colloid chemistry and experience working with water based emulsions is a strong advantage
