Summary

EVS, Inc. is seeking a Senior Protection and Controls Engineer to join our Substation team. The Engineer will have knowledge and experience in all aspects of electrical power distribution/transmission systems – especially substation protection and control – to support/lead system protection and controls for substation projects for a fast paced electrical engineering consulting firm.

The position is located in Eden Prairie, MN. Hybrid or remote location considered.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

  • Review work for Quality Assurance and Quality Control and ensure compliance with EVS quality standards
  • Responsible for executing project protection and controls deliverables on-schedule and on-budget
  • Participate in and facilitate meetings with stakeholders and clients to provide excellent client service
  • Manage, train and mentor group members and delegate tasks as needed
  • Work with the Director of Substation and Power Studies group to assess workload, capacity and hiring needs
  • Serve a protection and controls subject matter expert for substation projects
  • Create specifications for major substation equipment
  • Assist with new-project cost estimation and proposal preparation, as necessary
  • Create electrical collection system and substation one-line diagrams
  • Assist in completing general power systems studies, including short circuit, and grounding
  • Possess a deep understanding of NEC, NESC and IEEE standards and familiarity with emerging technologies
  • Review drawings, respond to request for information (RFIs) and assist with general construction support services
  • Proactively coordinate with other disciplines such as substation physical, power studies, and SCADA to drive project results
  • Lead the development of the following items related to power system protection:
    • System protection and relay philosophy documentation/calculations
    • Relay settings files for SEL, GE, Siemens, or other relay manufacturers
    • Protection coordination, short circuit, arc flash, and other power studies
    • NERC compliance support
    • Substation RTU and meter configuration files (preferred)
  • Perform technical analyses and prepare the following new documentation or modify existing documentation:
    • Conceptual designs
    • One-line and three-line diagrams
    • AC & DC schematics
    • Wiring diagrams
    • Bill of materials
    • Relay panel layout
    • Control enclosure layout and specifications
    • Cable schedules
    • Technical support for field personnel
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited university or college
  • PE or ability to obtain within one year
  • 5-6 years of experience in Electrical Engineering
  • Excellent work ethic: thorough, accurate, and quality conscious in the performance of job duties
  • Ability to work within scheduling and costs constraints to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Knowledge of transformer/bus differential, feeder protection, cap bank protection, and line relays
  • Practical experience with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, SEL AcSELerator, and other electrical analysis software
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Excel, and Word
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills (for writing study reports and client correspondence)
  • Work experience on power transmission or renewable substation projects for a utility or engineering consultant
  • Background in electrical engineering with project experience in medium and high Voltage AC
