Job description

Grow a Better Tomorrow with Nufarm.

We know that growing is about more than just crops and cultivation. It’s about sunshine and rain, early mornings and hard work. It can be frustratingly unpredictable but also wonderfully uplifting. More than anything, it’s about people. Nufarm is the dependable partner behind thousands of agricultural success stories. Every day, growers around the world turn to our products and our people to help with the challenges of fighting disease, weeds and pests, and to increase crop yields. **

How can you grow with Nufarm?**

Nufarm is looking for a Field Research & Development Manager for our Crop Protection business segment reporting to the Director, Technical Services Ag. The Field Research & Development Manager will perform a lead role in identifying, implementing and managing product performance programs for new product development opportunities in the US Crop Protection segment. The scope of responsibilities ranges from strategic review of new concepts (global or NA origin), field program implementation, preparation of use directions for new products and transfer of technological information to the US Technical Services team. This is a ‘hand on’ position that may involve tactical involvement in all aspects of field program implementation and may be expanded to include management of regional FR&D Managers or Biologists. **

Be part of building a better Nufarm**

  • Product Development

    • Identify and analyse commercial opportunities from a technical perspective, based on agreed upon commercial needs & tactics. This includes technical input and product development needs for acquisition and strategic alliance opportunities.
    • From a technical perspective, assist in the discussions with multi-national and other potential partners in the pursuit of opportunities for Nufarm such as assessing new a.i. opportunities, investigating potential existing product interactions, analyzing product divestment options, etc.
    • Prepare product development strategies / plans / budgets to support technical & regulatory needs of new products accepted for U.S. Crop Protection Development.
    • Work as a team player in close cooperation with Business Development, Regulatory, Formulation Development, Project Management & Global Portfolio Management to successfully implement product development projects and key partner development projects that are identified within the global or regional workstreams.
    • Investigate and recommend where appropriate, patent protection for the company’s proprietary and intellectual property in cooperation with Business Development and the company’s legal resources.
  • Field Development

    • Accountable for execution and management of product development programs & field trials by coordinating with Nufarm and external resources.
    • Work closely with Business Development and Formulations Developments to design and validate formulations for new technologies and new combination products for existing a.i.
    • Develop protocols for US Crop Protection efficacy and crop safety greenhouse & field trials.
    • Establish field trial budgets, monitor spending, pay field trial cooperators and provide forecasts to VP of Portfolio Solutions as requested.
    • Provide timely estimates of field program sample needs to NA/Global formulation chemists. Work closely with Formulations Development to facilitate sample shipments to greenhouse/field cooperators.
    • Visit as many FR&D trials as possible to gain insights on experimental design, obtain preliminary data and validate study quality aspects.
    • Provide a recommendation on a project’s technical viability and future development based on a analysis of greenhouse/field study results. Issues such as a.i. and formulation technical positioning (incl. features, advantages, benefits, use applications, efficacy, crop injury, competitive product comparisons, resistance management, etc.) will be fundamentally important to consider when analyzing the trial data.
    • Archive FR&D study results in a format and location readily accessible by NA and Global Portfolio Solutions personnel.
  • Regulatory
    • Provide relevant product use information to Regulatory Managers and collaborate on the design of field regulatory studies (such as residue trials).
    • Collaborate with Regulatory Managers in preparing use directions for new product labels or adding new use sites to existing product labels focusing on target pests, application techniques and rates. Review entire new product labels for technical accuracy of biological information.
    • Work closely with Regulatory Managers to develop special regulatory documents (such as a product benefit analyzes or resistance management/monitoring programs) for federal or state label submissions. Identify title and location of relevant supporting trials/information for potential data compensation reviews. Assist with the preparation of efficacy packages for California when requested.
    • Ensure transparency of U.S. FR&D programs with Canada/Mexico/Global Regulatory & Development personnel so field trial results are readily available to support the submission of efficacy data packages in countries accepting U.S. studies.
  • Technical Service

    • Provide leadership for the transfer of technical information pertaining to new products during the launch phase of product development. Provide Technical Service with a dossier of technical material during the transition of lead project ownership. Provide Technical Service Team with technical information necessary to develop literature supporting the launch.
    • Assist Technical Service Team with training to sales, marketing & channel partners on key products particularly during product launch efforts.
    • Incorporate relevant competitor products and Nufarm launch-phase technologies in FR&D study designs as comparison standards to support dual development/support objectives. Coordinate trial placement with Technical Service Team to optimize efficiency of field trial visits. Include TST in protocol review and site selection processes to optimize the commercial relevancy of results.
    • Coordinate Nufarm representation on professional societies with Technical Service Team.
    • FR&D will take the lead for field trial information management systems & processes since most early phase studies are for decision making and need to be archived.
  • Manufacturing

    • Review standard Acceptable Contamination Limit matrices prepared by Manufacturing to eliminate the risk of an adverse biological consequence due to product contamination during production.
    • In the case of an accidental contamination, work closely with Manufacturing to identify potential exceptions to the standard ACL which would allow for normal product use without an unacceptable risk for adverse effects.

We are looking for someone with a PhD or M.S. in Entomology, Weed Science or Plant Pathology with at least 3 years of field experience.
