What You Will Do**
Monitor the health policy landscape to identify and capitalize on opportunities to help influence and communicate health policy and patient safety issues affecting plastic surgeons. Develop strategic products and resources that support ASPS members in practice and ASPS efforts to influence public and private sector policy.
In executing key responsibilities, the Health Policy Project Manager will conduct targeted budgetary development and management in relevant project centers and provide recommendations to the for areas of process refinement or areas where strategic programmatic development may be necessary.
Analyze and communicate to ASPS members health policy changes and health policy trends that impact the delivery of plastic surgery or patient safety. Identify, assess, and provide resources to the membership at large related to the clinical and business impact of new regulations.
Develop and manage patient safety improvement initiatives.
Serve as the project manager for the annual meeting with The Doctors Company (TDC). Working collaboratively with TDC staff, manage all aspects of the meeting, including overall meeting logistics, agenda selection, topic, presentation development/review, and post-meeting follow-up.
Oversee ASPS’s health policy product development
Collaborate with the American College of Surgeons to implement the yearly Health Policy scholarship. Coordinate the review, candidate selection process and distribution of funds. Maintain content accuracy on ASPS website and work collaboratively with Marketing and Communication staff to provide input and suggestions for marketing the program
Support as needed in the analysis and development of strategic responses to state and federal regulatory activities that impact plastic surgeons. Communicate to ASPS members key federal policies that impact healthcare delivery or touch on patient safety issues.
Lead the development and maintenance of the Health Policy pages at plasticsurgery.org
Write weekly Activity Updates to ASPS leadership and ASPS leadership on key staff actions.
Develop summary reports of health policy changes and ASPS health policy actions to be shared with ASPS physician leadership
Communicate important health policy updates and upcoming events through the weekly ASPS FOCUS, Plastic Surgery News, mass member email communications, and social media
Support Coding and Reimbursement function’s effort to monitor, analyze, and respond to private insurance carriers’ local and national coverage decisions related to plastic surgery.
Develop formal lines of coordination with Patient Education and Communications staff to ensure all health policy and patient safety information on plasticsurgery.org is accurate and current. Provide direction to the Patient Education Committee on education materials such as patient brochures to ensure presented information is timely. Work with Marketing and Communications teams to update outdated materials as needed.
Serve as the Society’s lead staff representative to the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders and participate as supporting/monitoring staff on the Surgical Care Coalition and the Alliance of Specialty Medicine
Develop and manage budgets for Healthcare Delivery, Patient Safety, CME Modules,
Academic Affairs Council, Informed Consent, Photographic Guidelines activities. **
Other Duties**
This position requires 12-15% travel with weekend meetings and occasional evening conference calls.
Perform other duties and projects as assigned by manager. **
Education**
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Minimum Bachelor’s degree required. Clinical experience or Master’s degree in public health or public policy, health or business administration, health services research, health information management, political science, economics, or related field desirable. **
Experience**
Two or three years’ experience working with health policy, health insurance,
patient safety, or physician quality reporting issues. Familiarity with performance measurement and quality improvement at the physician, health plan or hospital level; consensus bodies, such as NQF or PCPI; health information technology; procedural and diagnostic coding; and CMS regulatory processes helpful.
The ideal candidate has experience in evidence-based medicine and a working knowledge of evidence-based concepts, including research study design, literature search methods and programs (e.g. PubMed, Cochrane Database, CINAHL, etc.), the systematic review process, critically appraising studies for levels of evidence, and basic statistics.
