Summary:

The Vice President (VP) of Field Development oversees Breakthrough T1D’s chapter-based Field Organization that is implementing chapter-focused strategies for creating mission funding, galvanizing supporters, and growing revenue. The field organization is comprised of 200+ staff working across 60 chapters that align into 22 territories and 4 divisions. Breakthrough T1D Chapter staff work directly with local volunteers on fundraising programs and develop relationships with donors and leadership volunteers through various outreach activities and advocacy efforts.

The VP serves in a critical leadership role, reporting to the Senior Vice President, Field Engagement, providing leadership to 4 Associate Vice Presidents, and working in close partnership with the VP Fundraising Programs, AVP Field Operations, VP Leadership Giving, VP Corporate & Institutional Funding, AVP Legacy Giving, and VP Volunteer Engagement.

The VP, Field Development actively demonstrates and cascades the enterprise-wide mindsets: integrity, collaboration, results, and stewardship.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the achievement of fundraising, acquisition, awareness and volunteer activation goals of the field staff. Develops field strategy and serves as a thought partner to internal partners on best practice implementation.
  • Develops direct reports to new levels of performance and leadership and supports skill building in the areas of strategic planning, decision making, and management.  
  • Proactively identify, anticipate, and support change management and internal communication needs that impact the divisions and chapters. 

Fundraising:

  • Assures the strong execution of strategic revenue plans to drive profitable, diversified, and sustainable year-over-year growth across each division.
  • Provides direction and oversight to four divisions, ensuring that the responsibilities, authorities, and accountabilities are met in the core functions of division, territory and chapter-based activities – including constituent relationship management, Peer 2 Peer, Signature Events, volunteerism, awareness and advocacy.   
  • Lead integration of and alignment around national goals in the field and facilitate collaboration across chapters, territories, and divisions.
  • Partners with the National teams to align local activities with national strategy and to drive growth at the local level in mission impact, engagement and fundraising activities.  
  • Support and strengthen a high-performing field-based team focused on fundraising growth, developing new markets and enhancing current locations, and identifying new revenue opportunities.

Volunteerism:

  • Partner with colleagues on the Global Development team to drive volunteerism in the field and maximize the Chapter volunteer engagement.
  • Collaborates with global development leaders on strategies to identify, steward, and build pipeline of highly-engaged and impactful volunteer leaders throughout the field.
  • Champions meaningful engagement of volunteers at all levels and promotes a good working relationship between staff teams and volunteer leadership.  

Awareness:

  • Ensure consistent implementation of organizational strategies of Mission, MarCom, Finance and Technology teams to better support execution of strategy and vision from a mission funding perspective to the field.
  • Partner with the National mission team to align local and national mission impact strategy, and scale at the local level.
  • Interface with other key departments to ensure the field structure is equipped to drive results across the communities Breakthrough T1D serves.

Cultural Leadership / Administration Management:

  • Provide leadership and support to AVPs with a focus on collaboration, alignment, and accountability.
  • Demonstrates the ability to inspire, lead, and motivate teams while fostering an inclusive and respectful work environment through all interactions with staff and volunteers. Exhibits effective delegation skills to enhance both organizational, chapter, and individual productivity.
  • Monitors Division, Territory, and Chapter P&Ls; drives greater cost efficiencies and identifies areas of future growth opportunities.
  • Guides the development and assessment of annual and monthly budgets and ensures accurate financial forecasts. 
  • Proactively identify, anticipate, and support change management and internal communication needs that impact the divisions and chapters. 
  • Actively works cross-functionally with other departments to identify, implement, and improve workflow management practices and processes, as well as identify and improve integration among chapters, national teams, and volunteer resources within the field.
  • Represents interests, professionalism, and integrity of Breakthrough T1D in all activities and relationships through a unified message of the Breakthrough T1D mission and a commitment to organizational standards and leadership by personal example.    

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 15+ years in field-based fundraising, leading multi-disciplined teams to achieve revenue goals. Minimum 7 years in leadership for a multi-million-dollar organization with national & chapter-based health-related fundraising preferred. College degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a strong ability to resolve complex problems efficiently and promptly, while communicating clearly and effectively. Skilled in creatively identifying solutions and analyzing feedback, resolving conflicts, and achieving collaborative solutions with diplomacy, sensitivity, and tact with key stakeholders.
  • Expertise in market research, analysis, and metrics-driven revenue strategies, coupled with a demonstrated ability to meet revenue targets within a matrixed organization.
  • Experience with C-suite collaboration, team leadership, management, coaching, staff development.
  • A leadership style that brings self-awareness and empathy, high emotional intelligence and personal accountability. A blend of confidence and humility, along with a sense of humor.
  • Enthusiasm, commitment to excellence, and self-motivation.
  • Skilled in utilizing CRM Salesforce and Microsoft Suite to facilitate data-driven decision-making, performance evaluations, assessment of fundraising and engagement progress, and the execution of strategic plans.
  • Demonstrates adaptability to changing priorities and circumstances, and possesses expertise in creating consensus and successfully closing projects.
  • Excellent relationship management, written, verbal, presentation/communication, and interpersonal skills; Demonstrates a people-first attitude and interpersonal skills. Capability to work effectively with all levels of Breakthrough T1D leadership, volunteers, and staff.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of culture and belonging.
  • Estimated 40% travel required.

Target salary: $200-230k base
