Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Principal Data Engineer to drive the development of a scalable, high-performance healthcare data infrastructure. This role will be responsible for designing, building, and optimizing data pipelines that support analytics, insights, and business intelligence across a variety of healthcare datasets. The Principal Data Engineer will oversee the implementation of best-in-class data architecture and governance practices while ensuring compliance with industry standards such as HIPAA and SOC2. 

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a team working with cutting-edge technologies like Databricks, Snowflake, and cloud-based platforms to solve complex healthcare data challenges.

Location: Remote - US (Preference to applicants located in GA, TN, SC, NC, FL, TX & PA)

Reports to: Director, Data Science & Data Engineering

As a Principal Data Engineer at Trella, you will focus on:

  • Data Engineering Optimization

    • Drive best practices in data engineering, infrastructure, and governance to improve efficiency and reliability.
    • Optimize data processing workflows for performance and cost efficiency within cloud environments.
    • Deploy automated monitoring systems to continuously assess data pipelines, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks, errors, or failures to maintain optimal performance and reliability.
    • Collaborate with data science and product teams define long-term strategy, architecture, and technology choices.
    • Define and execute a technical roadmap for data engineering, prioritizing impact-driven projects.
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to cross-functional team members related to data engineering excellence.
  • Data Architecture & Pipeline Development

    • Design, build, and maintain scalable, efficient, and reliable data pipelines for transforming healthcare data such as medical and Rx claims, ACO CCLF and BCDA, EHR, and other healthcare datasets.
    • Implement ETL/ELT workflows using Snowflake, Databricks and other modern frameworks.
    • Ensure that data pipelines meet performance, reliability, and scalability standards.
    • Implement and manage import and export processes.
    • Partner with data science to support advanced modeling, reporting, and AI-driven insights.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Support

    • Partner with data scientists, analysts, and software engineers to ensure data solutions align with analytical and operational needs.
    • Actively participate in cross-functional discussions to drive data-driven decision-making.
    • Provide technical observations and recommendations to Data Science & Engineering leadership teams.
    • Work with IT, security, and compliance teams to implement best practices for data protection and privacy.
  • Process Improvement & Documentation

    • Develop and maintain clear documentation of data pipelines, workflows, and architecture.
    • Identify and implement automation opportunities to enhance data engineering processes.
    • Continuously evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to improve data infrastructure.

  • Minimum of 8 years of data engineering experience with proven experience serving as a technical lead.
  • Strong background in healthcare data engineering, working with claims, EHR, or population health datasets.
  • Proven experience in building and maintaining scalable data architectures in cloud environments.
  • Expertise in Python, SQL, and ETL frameworks for data processing and transformation.
  • Hands-on experience with Databricks, Snowflake, and AWS cloud services.
  • Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, related field, or equivalent years of experience.
  • Preferred but not required: Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, ICD-10).
