Be responsible for processes and procedures related to Baker Hughes' customs clearance. The Customs team supports the business as the importer of record and oversees with special emphasis, internal controls that support efficient customs operations and align to Baker Hughes IET customs standards.

As a Custom Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for achieving and maintaining an effective, efficient, and compliant customs operation program for Baker Hughes IET entities.
 

As a Customs Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for:
 

  • Acting as the primary point of contact for any customs operations related matters to facilitate and drive process enhancement and adherence. As well as with internal stakeholders, customers, and vendor queries.
  • Performing timely processing of notified imports and resolving daily inquiries regarding imports.
  • Filing customs declarations in the respective government system and issuing clearance instructions to approved customs brokers by the applicable business model.
  • Assisting in preparing custom clearance documentation when necessary and resolving transactional issues relating to the clearance of shipped goods by working daily with brokers and other related logistics providers.
  • Assessing current customs processes, look for efficiency and quality opportunities, propose process enhancement, drive improvement, process development and implementation.
  • Ensuring all customs documents are retained in accordance with local regulations and corporate policies, all processes properly documented as per quality standards.
  • Ensuring compliance and management of any authorized customs regimes or special program utilization and ensure accurate controls in place, while ensuring discharge of any duty and vat liability
  • Performing post-entry review of customs declarations and broker invoices and reporting findings, researching root cause of defects, initiating correction of declarations when required, suggesting improvement actions, and monitoring progress.
  • Ensuring that customs declarations of varying complexity are filed accurately and in a timely manner, ensuring “regulatory excellence” in dealing with customs administrations and in accordance with the BH business model, process requirements and applicable law.
  • Monitoring and tracking critical shipments and resolve problems when necessary; manage urgent business requests and resolve issues related to more complex customs transactions and supporting functions.
  • Providing advice & guidance to the customs operation’s teams on Customs related topics (e.g. valuation, origin, HS classification, Union Customs Code & global regulations), also teaming up with International Trade Compliance (ITC) as needed.
  • Supporting the implementation of Customs Special Programs and Free Trade Agreement Management
    Collect and report regular updates on agreed KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) to manager, Logistics leadership, and site leadership as required.
  • Performing analysis of global and regional trade processes

Major Challenges:

  • Establishment, evaluation, and improvement of local customs processes
  • Daily oversight of customs operational activities and special program utilization
  • Working with cross-functional teams to drive improvement.
  • Balancing commercial requirements with adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Operational management of multiple 3rd party service providers.

Performance Measures:

  • Operational Process Improvements
  • Measurement and minimization of daily import/export customs exceptions
  • Metrics Reporting and Data Analysis
  • In-house compliance training support
  • Maximize Duty Free and other Duty Reduction Special Programs
  • Ensure Compliance with Baker Hughes IET Standards and Special Programs requirements.
  • Ensure Trade responds to all CBSA/CARM inquiries.

To be successful in this role, you will:
 

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with 5+ years of experience in customs compliance operations, or a High School Diploma/GED with 8-10 years of experience
  • Have working knowledge of local customs and other regulatory agency requirements that relate to customs (CBSA, CARM, etc.).
  • Have self-directed, Influential leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Prior experience leading teams (either directly or indirectly) on processes, training, mentorship, etc.
  • Have a compelling background that reflects accomplishments in teamwork, integrity, responsibility, and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Have the ability to set goals and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a pressured environment.
  • Have successful problem-solving and project management skills.
  • Have the desire and ability to become a Licensed Customs Broker or obtain an appropriate in-country certification equivalent, if you do not have this currently.
