Job description

Science is seeking an Editorial Coordinator to perform heavy proofreading and light copyediting duties of research and commentary material for the Science journals. Responsibilities include proofreading electronic galley and page proofs for grammar, style, and syntax in accord with our style guide; marking up electronic proofs and working with copyeditors to resolve queries; proofreading online web pages and reporting errors or loss of functionality; and performing additional departmental tasks as detailed below.

What You’ll Do

  • Proofread (line-by-line) and lightly copyedit (when necessary) Science galley proofs to identify and correct grammatical and stylistic errors. Communicate with copyeditors to resolve any issues of clarity or meaning.
  • Proofread Science page proofs to verify that previously-identified errors have been corrected and that no new errors or other problems have been introduced.
  • Proofread web content for Science and sibling journals (Science Translational Medicine, Science Immunology, Science Robotics, and Science Signaling). Review each element of an article (text, figures, links) to confirm that it has been staged on our website cleanly and correctly.
  • Keep up to date on Science procedures and style.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include additional proofreading tasks, attending meetings with other journal staff, participating in training sessions, and providing feedback on new technologies and workflows.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent grasp of English grammar and spelling. Strong proofreading experience necessary and copyediting ability helpful; a sharp eye for detail.
  • Prior experience working with a style guide (ideally The Chicago Manual of Style) in a professional setting.
  • Experience comparing different document versions for consistency.
  • Ability to read and generally comprehend a high volume of complex scientific writing to identify inconsistencies and mistakes in grammar and style (and, occasionally, content).
  • Ability to mark text and figure changes in electronic documents and interpret changes marked by others (copyeditors, editors, authors).
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to clearly communicate questions/concerns to copyeditors, editors, designers, and other colleagues.
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently test all elements of a web page to identify any problems with functionality.
  • General computer skills; ability to quickly master a range of publishing-related software packages (e.g. Adobe Acrobat, K4, InCopy).

The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $48,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
