Cloud & Database Operations Engineer 

Location: Costa Rica (Remote)

Department: IT Operations

Reports To: IT Manager

Job Summary 

We are seeking a Cloud & Database Operations Engineer to oversee cloud infrastructure, database systems, and operational automation. This role involves maintaining AWS environments, ensuring system reliability, managing databases, and implementing DevOps best practices. The ideal candidate will have experience in Windows SQL Server administration, AWS database management, system administration, and cloud security. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Deploy, configure, and optimize AWS cloud infrastructure for database and application workloads.
  • Administer and maintain Windows SQL Server databases (MySQL & PSQL), ensuring availability, performance, and security.
  • Manage AWS database solutions, including RDS, Aurora, Redshift, Opensearch, DynamoDB, and serverless architectures.
  • Implement database migration strategies from on-premises SQL Server to AWS databases.
  • Perform system administration tasks across Windows and Linux environments, including security patching and optimization.
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and database deployments.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and database maintenance using Terraform, Ansible, Python, Bash, and PowerShell.
  • Ensure compliance with cloud security best practices, including IAM configurations, network security, and database encryption.
  • Monitor system and database performance, analyze root causes, and proactively resolve bottlenecks.
  • Establish robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery plans for databases and cloud environments.
  • Collaborate with engineering, security, and operations teams to enhance cloud reliability and database efficiency.
  • Support production deployments, ensuring minimal downtime and adherence to operational best practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications 

  • Strong experience managing AWS cloud environments, including networking, storage, and compute services.
  • Expertise in Windows SQL Server administration, database performance tuning, indexing, and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS database services such as RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and serverless solutions.
  • Proficiency in database migration strategies, replication, clustering, and sharding techniques.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps methodologies, version control (Git), CI/CD workflows, and automation tools.
  • System administration experience in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Strong scripting skills in Python, PowerShell, Bash, Terraform, and Ansible for infrastructure automation.
  • Knowledge of cloud security frameworks, IAM policies, VPC configurations, and database encryption techniques.
  • Experience in production deployments and supporting live applications in cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools for proactive system and database management.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Database – Specialty, or equivalent certifications.
  • Experience with containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes for database management.
  • Knowledge of hybrid cloud environments integrating AWS and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Exposure to Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles for database and infrastructure resilience.
