The Role  

We are looking for a dynamic and strategic teammate to join Burkland on a full-time contractor basis located in Sri Lanka. If you have a background in accounting and a passion for helping startups thrive, Burkland is a wonderful fit for you!

Your Typical, Atypical Day 

This role has variety at its core. From facilitating client meetings to reconciling accounts, no day will be "typical." Supporting our startup clients who need accounting expertise but don’t require an internal team at their growth stage (usually Seed through Series C clients), there is always a lot of meaningful work to be done!

You’ll be working fully remotely! *Must be able to work during U.S. business hours. So, whether in pajama pants and a button-down or taking calls at a coffee shop, you design where and how you work each day. You will work with a variety of clients, requiring the ability to shift contexts, communicate effectively, prioritize tasks, and evaluate needs.

Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to build robust accounting processes and systems for our clients. Understanding and embracing the agile and scrappy nature of startups is essential.

About You

Your Experience & Background  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • CIMA Qualification preferred.

  • At least 5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a startup environment.

  • Experience using QuickBooks Online.

  • Proficiency in learning and adapting to new systems.

  • Experience working remotely and developing strong team relationships based on trust and accountability.

  • Clear and professional communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Willingness to follow established policies and procedures accurately.

  • High level of confidentiality while working with sensitive client data.

Core Competencies  

  • Strong finance-based analytical skills and interpersonal communication.

  • Expertise in accounting and client management, including:

  •  Prepaid revenue, deferred revenue, and revenue recognition.

  •  Intangible asset management and mark-to-market valuation.

  •  Inventory, purchase orders, and prepaid expenses.

  •  Payment processing systems (e.g., Stripe).

  •  Creating and managing monthly close lists.

  •  Producing tax-ready year-end reports.

  •  Accounts payable and receivable processing.

  •  Producing financial reports and GL account reconciliations.

  • Competency with software, using platforms like G-Suite, QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Expensify, and Concur.

  • Proficiency in video conferencing tools such as Zoom to facilitate client meetings.
