The Opportunity:
We’re currently seeking a Sr. Accountant to join us as our first in-house accounting hire. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, self-motivated professional to lay the foundation of our accounting function and grow alongside a dynamic, fast-paced, impact-driven startup that’s changing healthcare for the better. Our ideal candidate will be analytical, collaborative, and scrappy. The candidate MUST be obsessed with continuous improvement, exhibiting a growth mindset personally/professionally, while driving to create continual improvements to our accounting processes and capabilities.
As an early hire on our Accounting Team, this role will come with a ton of autonomy, a broad scope, and will allow you to put your fingerprints on our processes as we build it from the ground up. From day one, you will have an impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of our daily operations, and a lasting influence on our growth plans. You will have high leadership visibility, and lots of room for advancement within Greater Good Health.
Responsibilities:
As our Sr. Accountant, you’ll be both a hands-on contributor and a strategic thinker. You’ll take ownership of core accounting operations, implement processes and systems, and work closely with leadership to help us scale responsibly. Your day-to-day will include
Owning the full accounts payable process, from invoice intake to payment execution, ensuring timely and accurate processing
Preparing for and managing audit processes, including gathering supporting documentation, coordinating with external auditors, and ensuring timely responses to audit inquiries
Supporting tax compliance by collaborating with external tax team to provide schedules, reconciliations, and documentation needed for federal, state, and local tax filings (income, franchise, sales/use, etc.)
Supporting the accounts receivable process, including tracking receivables, reconciling payments, and communicating with customers as needed
Leading the month-end close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
Overseeing payroll processing, including reviewing payroll for accuracy, proper tax withholdings, and benefit deductions, while ensuring compliance with company policies and federal, state, and local regulations.
Ensuring payroll compliance and reporting, including oversight of payroll tax filings (e.g., 941s, W-2s, 1099s), staying current on relevant legal and regulatory updates, and supporting internal and external payroll audits.
Reconciling payroll-related accounts and ensuring accurate integration with the general ledger, including variance analysis and resolution of discrepancies.
Establishing and documenting accounting policies and procedures
Ensuring compliance with GAAP and relevant tax/regulatory requirements
Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts
Manage state expansion efforts to ensure we can operate, generate revenue and hire team members in new states
Collaborating cross-functionally with teams like People, Legal, and Tech
Evaluating and implementing accounting tools and software to support efficiency and scale
Qualifications:
5+ years of accounting experience
A strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
Hands-on experience managing AP and supporting AR processes
Familiarity with audit prep and working directly with external auditors
Experience supporting tax compliance and coordinating with third-party tax providers
Experience in startups or healthcare is a plus
CPA preferred, but not required
