About the role:  
 
Alongside a talented Product Manager, this role will establish a brand new technology charter and team serving Hippo’s Spinnaker business operations. Spinnaker operates as a fronting insurance company, where we issue policies on behalf of partners who manage the underwriting and claims, while we provide the licensed insurance platform. Spinnaker’s B2B platform is highly reliant on receiving and processing data from third parties to be standardized and made available to various constituents such as internal stakeholders, regulators, and other partners, such as reinsurers. 

As the Spinnaker charter Engineering Manager, you’ll hire and lead a group of talented, passionate software and data engineers. You’ll exert technical and operational leadership by investing in their individual growth, managing team operations, and participating in their day-to-day work. You’ll partner closely with a Product Manager and multiple business stakeholders to craft and develop a strong vision for our internal software and data products, evaluating business impact and technical trade-offs. Alongside our central data team and existing Staff engineers, you’ll lead the efforts to deliver a new, foundational data system enabling Spinnaker’s ambitious business growth. While this role does not involve consumer-facing products, you will have the opportunity to identify, design, and deliver internal facing administrative tools and partner-facing data integrations. 

What will you do?
  • Lead the formation of a brand-new engineering team. 
  • Design, build, and evolve core internal tools and platforms. 
  • Collaborate closely with product, finance, legal, and data stakeholders. 
  • Drive architectural decisions and establish best practices from the ground up. 
  • Foster a culture of experimentation, innovation, and technical ownership. 
  • Coach and mentor a small but growing team of engineers. 
  • Define team goals and outcomes through clear, measurable OKRs. 
  • Navigate ambiguity and drive execution in a zero-to-one setting. 
  • Represent the engineering voice in high-level strategic discussions. 
  • Drive technical review of design documents, code review, prioritization of development roadmap, and fixes. 
  • Work with, and influence, cross-functional stakeholders within Hippo, e.g. Product, Design, QA, and Finance. 
  • Mentor and lead other engineers, develop them for higher impact and teamwork. 
  • With a data-driven approach, show technical leadership, focusing on excellent execution and high-quality software delivery. 
  • Work with teams in our global locations across the US and Poland.
