Job description

POSITION SUMMARY: Leads a team of project engineers, project engineering managers, and project specialists that coordinate cross-functional engineering activities. These encompass a wide range of internal and external projects which include R&D projects, RFI responses and workshops that support business development activities, and customer projects of various sizes. The Project Engineering Department is responsible for providing the following types of work: resource plans for proposal development, basis of estimate documentation for engineering work scopes for proposals, consolidated engineering inputs on project timelines, and leadership of project deliverables within schedule and budget with high quality. A key element of this is planning, coordinating, and facilitating cross-function and cross-company technical topics on large projects.

 

The project engineering group serves as the engineering single point of contact for functions external to engineering such as business development and product and project delivery as well as external entities such as partners on multi-company projects and customers on customer projects.

 

The Senior Manager, Project Engineering is responsible to act as project engineer on some projects as well as lead the team of project engineers for their assigned projects. Success in this role will require building organizational relationships, interfacing with companies contracted to assist NuScale in completing projects, and interfacing with external entities at all levels including Sr. executive levels.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Project Engineering:
    1. Leads the activities of a multi-disciplinary engineering team including NuScale and subcontracted technical resources in close coordination with project managers and other project resources to achieve the goals of assigned projects.
    2. Develops interpersonal relationships necessary to complete a large complex work scope between multiple parties who often have different work practices and priorities.
    3. Engages with project leadership from all stakeholders (internal and external) on a regular basis to develop engineering process infrastructure and manage complex interface issues
    4. Develops, maintains, and controls any project-specific engineering processes and procedures needed for the efficient execution of the assigned project. Maintain the standard of high quality and timely completion of tasks.
    5. Has a diverse understanding of NuScale engineering disciplines, to be able to provide guidance on a wide spectrum of complex technical problems.
    6. Is flexible and adaptable, able to integrate new project personnel, manage first of a kind issues, and adapt to a constantly shifting business development environment.
    7. Understands and applies sound approaches and standards for solving technical problems in applicable discipline, plus working knowledge of other related fields.
    8. Proactively identifies and achieves resolution of project issues and anticipated challenges, including escalation of issues within the NuScale organization when necessary.
    9. Provides direction and coordinate project-related activities through other engineering managers and supervisors.
    10. Supports project risk assessment and risk mitigation activities.
  2. Management of group including:
    1. Human resource responsibilities, which typically include estimating personnel needs, scheduling, scope assessment, training and performance management
    2. Develops work schedules for assigned area of responsibility including task definition, cost estimation, and manpower planning.
    3. Reviews and writes reports, approves expenditures, enforces rules, and makes decisions about the purchase of materials or services.
    4. Evaluates performance and administers coaching and counseling.
    5. Assesses the qualifications and training needs of their team and ensures each team member is qualified to perform assigned tasks. Develops team members’ capabilities in support of individual career goals and team objectives.
  3. Provides technical and advisory assistance to other projects and offices.
  4. Interacts with management and other organizations to coordinate across organizational lines (includes executives, managers, supervisors, and engineering subcontractors); collaborates with document control and record management group and information technology department.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Quality Assurance: Commits to the understanding or ability to understand the quality assurance regulations, standards and guidelines of 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and ASME NQA-1 preferred.

 

MINIMUM SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited college or university. Advance degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ experience in engineering with progressively increasing leadership experience. An overall knowledge of the fundamental operating principles and systems associated with a nuclear power plant. Ability to work well in a complex project organization and provide direction both above and below the management position.
  • Industry Requirements: Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.

Pay and Benefits: 

The target pay range for this position is $165,576 - $199,833 annually.  The full pay range is $148,447 - $232,188.
