Job description

Position Overview:
As a Public Entity Liability Adjuster, you’ll be responsible for the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of third-party liability claims involving public agencies. These claims may include personal injury, civil rights violations, property damage, employment practices liability, and other unique risks facing public entities. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of municipal operations, regulatory frameworks, and claim resolution strategies specific to the public sector.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Investigate and manage liability claims involving public entities from first notice of loss through closure.
•    Analyze coverage, assess liability, and evaluate damages, working within statutory immunity frameworks and applicable tort laws.
•    Interview witnesses, take statements, gather documentation, and collaborate with legal counsel as needed.
•    Maintain clear, timely, and accurate file documentation and reporting in compliance with public sector requirements.
•    Evaluate and recommend claim reserves and settlements; negotiate resolutions within authority or in conjunction with leadership and counsel.
•    Attend mediations, arbitrations, depositions, and settlement conferences as needed.
•    Serve as a resource for risk managers and public officials, providing insight and guidance on best practices and risk mitigation.

Qualifications:
•    Minimum 5 years of experience handling liability claims, with at least 2 years specifically focused on public entity or governmental claims.
•    In-depth knowledge of public sector liability exposures, tort claim acts, civil rights law and sovereign immunity doctrines.
•    Strong analytical and decision-making skills; comfort navigating complex claims involving multiple stakeholders.
•    Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a professional, service-oriented approach.
•    Proficiency in claims systems and standard office software.
•    Valid adjuster license(s), if required in state(s) of operation.

Preferred:
•    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in claims, law, public administration, or a related field.
•    Industry designations such as AIC, CPCU, or ARM are a strong plus.
•    Experience working with Joint Powers Authorities (JPAs), risk pools, or third-party administrators serving public entities.
