Job description

POSITION OPEN
Position: Senior Core Design Engineer 
Place of Work: Camden (NJ); Jupiter (FL); Cranberry (PA), Madrid (Spain), Bristol (UK), Kyiv (Ukraine).

Holtec International seeks highly experienced applicants for a senior-level position in its nuclear analysis group to support the continued development and licensing of the SMR-300 reactor through its subsidiary, SMR LLC. This contractor role is a fully remote opportunity and is ideal for individuals with significant technical expertise and experience in core design for pressurized water reactors (PWRs), particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The selected candidate will be responsible for contributing to the core design and analysis of the SMR-300, with a focus on high-quality technical execution in compliance with NRC regulations and industry standards. The position involves close collaboration with internal engineering teams and regulatory stakeholders, and offers flexibility for an independent contributor to have meaningful impact on an advanced nuclear energy project.

Minimum Technical Requirements:

  • BS degree in Nuclear Engineering or closely related technical field with at least 7 years of relevant experience
    — OR —
    MS degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience
    — OR —
    PhD with at least 4 years of relevant experience in nuclear core/fuel design

  • Expertise in PWR core design, neutronics, and simulation

  • Demonstrated experience with CASMO/SIMULATE

  • Familiarity with NRC regulations and QA requirements

  • Strong communication and technical writing skills

  • U.S. work authorization and eligibility to access export-controlled information

Desirable Additional Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Python for simulation automation or data processing

  • Familiarity with core accident analysis methods (e.g., rod ejection)

  • Experience with core simulation platforms such as MCNP and S5K

  • Knowledge of licensing methodologies including technical specs, safety margins, and federal regulations

Software Tools Used: CASMO/SIMULATE, MCNP, S5K, Python; Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Experience Required:
4–10+ years, depending on academic qualifications.
