Job description

At MNTN, we put our people first, full stop. This allows our company culture to be defined by our team members, and their shared values, like trust, ambition, quality, radical honesty, and compassionate leadership. It’s why we all really love working for the Hardest Working Software in Television™ (and also why we were named one of Ad Age’s Best Places To Work in 2024.)

We pride ourselves on bringing unrivaled performance and simplicity to Connected TV advertising. Our self-serve technology makes running TV ads as easy as search and social and helps brands drive measurable conversions, revenue, site visits, and more. It’s what led MNTN to being named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in 2023. You can learn more about us and everything we do by visiting https://mountain.com/.

We’re committed to innovation that empowers, not replaces. At MNTN, AI is a tool for growth, enhancing efficiency while keeping a people-first approach. Our goal is to streamline workflows and drive new solutions—without compromising the human element that makes our company great.

So if wanting to do more, own more, and make a bigger impact comes naturally to you, then you may be the person we're looking for to join us in our next stage of growth.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Principal Architect for our bidding squad. This team is responsible for developing and maintaining the core features of our high-availability ad buying platform, capable of handling 400,000 requests per second. You will play a critical role in ensuring the scalability, reliability, and performance of our platform, while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

What You’ll Do:

  • Mentor and support a team of backend engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous learning
  • Define and drive the technical vision for our backend systems, with a focus on scalability, performance, and reliability
  • Oversee the design and development of microservices and APIs that power our platform
  • Champion engineering best practices like code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration/deployment
  • Jump in with hands-on technical guidance when needed to unblock the team or provide architectural support
  • Lead incident response efforts and help ensure we’re building reliable, observable, and resilient systems
  • Partner closely with product managers and other teams to align on priorities, define requirements, and deliver high-quality work on time
  • Take ownership of projects end-to-end, identifying risks and managing dependencies along the way
  • Contribute to and evolve our backend tech stack—currently focused on Rust, Kotlin, Docker, and Kubernetes—within a distributed, high-traffic environment

What You’ll Bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in backend software development, focusing on high-performance distributed systems
  • 5+ years of experience in mentoring or leading engineering teams
  • Proven track record of building and scaling high-traffic platforms
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture and containerization technologies
  • Experience with Rust and Kotlin is highly preferred
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience with AdTech platforms is a plus

MNTN Perks:

  • 100% remote within the US
  • Flexible vacation policy
  • Annual vacation allowance for travel related expenses
  • Three-day weekend every month of the year
  • Competitive compensation
  • 100% healthcare coverage
  • 401k plan
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for dependent, medical, and dental care
  • Access to coaching, therapy, and professional development
