Job description

Shape the Future of Fire Safety through Innovation!

At Hempel, engineering is about more than calculations and codes—it’s about solving real challenges with smart, sustainable solutions. We’re on the lookout for a Structural Fire Engineer with advanced finite element modelling (FEM) expertise to help drive the next generation of fire protective coatings.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a forward-thinking team at the forefront of performance-based fire engineering. Get ready to influence designs, impact global projects, and collaborate with experts across fields!

Help protect the world’s most valuable assets with world-class coatings

This role sits at the intersection of innovation, science, and real-world application. By developing sophisticated FEM simulations, this position helps ensure Hempel’s fire protection solutions stand strong under pressure—literally.

Key areas of focus include:
  • Developing and validating FEM models to simulate the thermal and structural behaviour of coatings under fire exposure.
  • Conducting coupled thermal-structural analyses and applying data from fire tests to improve product performance.
  • Using tools like ABAQUS, ANSYS, SAFIR, and OpenSees to perform detailed simulations.
  • Collaborating with material scientists, design teams, and clients on global projects in both cellulosic and hydrocarbon sectors.
  • Preparing clear technical reports and sharing insights with colleagues and clients alike.

Fire safety is a shared mission at Hempel, and this role is central to it.

What We're Looking For

Bringing advanced technical skills to the table is essential—but so is the ability to translate complex simulations into actionable design insights.

  • An MSc or equivalent experience in Structural Engineering, Fire Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience in FEM with a focus on fire scenarios and coating performance.
  • A deep understanding of thermal-structural interaction and high-temperature material behaviour.
  • Familiarity with international fire safety standards (Eurocodes, ASCE, NFPA).
  • Knowledge of intumescent coatings (cellulosic and hydrocarbon) and fire dynamics.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or Fortran for model automation.
  • Membership of the Institute of Fire Engineers is a bonus.

Excited to shape the future of fire engineering with us? Let’s build something extraordinary—together!

Join a distributed team that's dedicated to innovation, sustainability, and crafting impact. Opportunity to improve fire safety on iconic structures with groundbreaking engineering solutions. Flexible working, supportive leadership, and continuous development are all part of the package. It’s a place to grow, thrive, and leave a mark.
