Job description

This is a remote position.

Position Overview: 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing newsroom and help lead our editorial team in delivering coverage that reports on the effects of factory farming on climate, health, animals, workers and rural communities. 

As Sentient’s Science Editor and Newsletter Lead, you will play a key role in growing our newsletter in order to expand how we reach and engage with our audience. The Science Editor and Newsletter Lead will also edit stories that rely heavily on research. You will work with writers and your fellow editors to ensure your edits are in line with Sentient’s editorial vision and style guide, as well as AP style.This role is ideal for you if you are an experienced journalist with strong editorial skills, strong knowledge of the intersection of food and climate and experience in newsletter management. 



Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Editorial Management (50%): 
  • Edit stories in line with Sentient’s editorial mission, Sentient’s style guide and AP style. Ensure content is accurate and timely. 
  • Edit and proofread content to ensure clarity, consistency and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Guide and mentor assigned staff writers and fact checkers.
Newsletter Management (20%):
  • Develop an ongoing newsletter strategy to maximize the reach of our content. 
  • Plan, create and distribute engaging newsletters to our subscriber base.
  • Develop strategies to grow our newsletter audience and improve open and click-through rates.
  • Monitor newsletter performance and analyze metrics to optimize content and delivery.
Image Selection and Management (5%):
  • Oversee the selection and editing of high-quality images to accompany articles, ensuring visual appeal and relevance.
  • Work with photographers and graphic designers to produce original visual content where appropriate.
  • Ensure all images meet copyright and licensing requirements.
Collaboration (10%):
  • Work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to plan and execute editorial strategies.
  • Oversee and implement project management tools to ensure the smooth running of editorial workflow.
  • Collaborate with other editors and writers to ensure stories are in line with Sentient’s editorial mission.
  • Participate in and host meetings related to editorial output and strategy.
Team Leadership (5%):
  • Lead and mentor a team of writers.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative working environment.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to team members to enhance their skills and performance.
Quality Control (5%):
  • Maintain high standards of journalistic integrity and accuracy.
  • Monitor site analytics and audience feedback to make informed decisions about content placement and presentation.
  • Ensure all content is in line with AP style and Sentient’s editorial mission.
Content Strategy and Analytics (5%):
  • Analyze content performance using analytics tools and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and best practices.
  • Provide regular reports and insights on content performance and audience engagement.


Requirements

Desired skills and experience:

  • Extensive editorial experience.

  • Deep knowledge of the intersection of food and climate science, or ability to learn and understand complex research.

  • Proven track record in managing newsletters and growing subscriber engagement.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading abilities.

  • Proficiency in using content management systems (CMS) and newsletter platforms.

  • Ability to analyze performance metrics and adjust strategies accordingly.

  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Ability to work autonomously and proactively.

The recruitment process is expected to proceed as follows;

  • Step 3: Candidates who pass the first round interview stage can expect a second interview stage with a time-limited work test for which we will compensate candidates for their time

  • Step 4: Candidates who have been successful in the second interview stage and time-limited work test will be invited to a third interview round with Sentient’s leadership team.

Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) position that is remote. Candidates should be based in the US and working times must be compatible with East cost working hours. 

Our total reward offering for this position includes the following. 
  • A salary within the range of $80,000 to $90,000 per year (pro-rata based on the part time hours), considering candidate experience
