Job Summary
As the largest online distributor of restaurant supplies and equipment, WebstaurantStore hosts an expansive catalogue with over 430,000 products that are delivered through fast, dependable shipping. Unlike most in the e-commerce arena, almost all of our technological design, development, and systems management is done in-house, allowing us to create custom solutions within an ever-changing market.
This consistent, organic growth, is why we have a need for a Director of Database Development and Business Intelligence to lead our database and business intelligence teams, drive strategic initiatives, and optimize database performance. This high-impact role requires a balance of technical expertise, strategic leadership, and team empowerment to foster innovation and scalability across our data ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Oversee a 100+ person department spanning Database Development and Business Intelligence, ensuring strategic alignment with company goals.
- Lead, inspire, and mentor ~8 managers and their teams, guiding them through performance development and career growth.
- Balance strategic leadership and technical expertise, allocating your time between department-wide initiatives, and day-to-day management.
- Establish, document, and drive DB/BI best practices to promote scalability, optimization, and security in a hybrid environment.
- Collaborate with BA, QA, and Development teams to align priorities, manage projects effectively, and drive innovation.
- Promote a culture of trust, collaboration, and adaptability; fostering an environment where teams can succeed without excessive oversight.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed while sitting/standing and interfacing with a personal computer.
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
- Requires the regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
- Requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
- Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50lbs.
Remote Work Qualifications
- Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 75mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used to perform day-to-day tasks.
- Access to a home router and modem.
- A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
- A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
- The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
- Legal residents of one of the following states: (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.
Experience
- 10+ years of leadership experience within a data-focused environment, including people management at an enterprise level and success leading large teams with direct-report managers.
- Strong expertise in modern MSBI stack/database technology (SQL Server, PowerBI, Redis, Elasticsearch, etc.) and managing large-scale, high-performance databases.
- A background in DB/BI development and data warehousing with a deep technical understanding required to support engineering teams.
- Familiarity with cloud vs. on-prem decisions, understanding that while some DB/BI solutions are cloud-based, core operational databases will remain on-premises.
- Microsoft Fabric experience preferred but not required.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field; or equivalent combined experience.
- A Master’s degree (MBA or technical discipline) is a plus but not required.
Desired Traits
- Excellent public speaking and leadership communication skills – someone who can inspire teams and communicate a clear vision.
