Job description

Role Overview

As a Senior Concept Artist at Coatsink, alongside the Head Of Art, you help to shape the visual identity and style of our games. You're one of the first to get started in pre-production, doing sketches, drawings and paintings. You're a creative ideas machine who enjoys the process of visual design and expected to iterate on ideas and adapt to new ones.

It is expected that you will have a strong design sense and an excellent grasp on the fundamentals of art including perspective, lighting, design, composition and colour. Communication and teamwork are very important, as is working under time constraints. 

Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Work closely with the Head Of Art and Art Leads to carry out in-depth research and establish a style, mood, and aesthetic for all visual aspects of the game, including visual feedback like VFX and UI.
  • You have a wide visual library and can tap into this alongside your project reference and research material. You'll be designing characters, creatures, environments, and provide detailed drawings of assets such as props, weapons, and collectibles.
  • The work you produce inspires and informs the rest of the team, and often acts as a base of inspiration for other departments to get started.
  • During production you'll continue to help the 3D team with scene paint overs and provide additional concepts that may be required.
  • Self-management skills and the ability to uphold the Art Direction set by yourself and the Head Of Art with autonomy.
  • Is able to provide support to project leads in pre-production and production.
  • Providing time estimates for fulfilling tasks.
  • Able to provide feedback and support to junior and intermediate members of the art department.
  • Communicating effectively with other developers as well as interface with clients on work for hire projects.
  • Attending meetings and stand-ups punctually.


Person Specification

Required Experience

  • Must have a portfolio of work demonstrating excellent artistic skills and a good mind for innovative visual design.
  • 3+ years of education and training as an artist.
  • Knowledge of digital drawing/painting software such as Photoshop or equivalent.
  • A strong draughtsperson with a clear grasp of perspective, form, structure and line control.
  • A strong painter with a clear understanding of lighting and colour relationships.

Preferred/Desirable Experience of

  • 1-3+ shipped titles.
  • 4-7+ years of games industry experience.
  • Relevant degree in Games Art or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of industry standard 3D software.

  • Ability to interact and communicate across all disciplines and with colleagues effectively.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Self-management skills. Ability to formulate plans for sprints and applicable tasks.
  • Ability to break down art style and creation of style guides for the art team during development.
  • Work in a collaborative spirit both within the team and with other departments, such as Design, Animation, VFX, UI, Audio, etc.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt following the needs of a project.
