Role Summary

Renew Home is seeking an experienced Regulatory and Compliance Counsel to provide sound, practical and actionable legal advice and business leadership to join our growing team. We are revolutionizing the energy industry by connecting smart homes with the smart grid to promote clean energy and consumer empowerment. We're looking for a dynamic and business-minded lawyer to support our mission.

What You Will Do

Primary Focus

  • Support energy regulatory compliance.
  • Counsel on the company’s participation in energy and capacity markets.
  • Advise on application of the rules of ISO/RTOs, FERC, and state PUC/PSCs and provide legal support and advice on regulatory and policy issues.

Responsibilities

  • Work dynamically across compliance workstreams with minimal supervision.
  • Provide legal review and advice across all departments and functions.
  • Address broader strategic issues and matters of first impression.
  • Manage specialist outside counsel and subject matter experts

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Reports to the head of Legal.
  • Acts as a key member of the company’s legal team.
  • Works closely with department leaders to achieve business objectives, mitigate risks and ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports compliance, energy regulatory, and corporate compliance matters.
  • Manage required disclosures to FERC, state agencies, etc.
  • Implement compliance frameworks and ensure adherence to industry standards.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Business-forward in-house energy lawyer with leadership skills and a proven record of successfully handling complex legal and compliance matters.
  • Passionate about fighting climate change and scaling sustainable solutions.
  • Experience with clean energy products and services.
  • Experience with areas of compliance beyond energy regulatory, including privacy, corporate and consumer protection.
  • Experience negotiating resource adequacy or other supply contracts with load serving entities.
  • Experience preparing comments to and responding to requests from energy regulatory agencies.

Location & Travel

  • Remote position.
  • Strong preference for candidates based in or near the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Some domestic travel required.

Requirements

  • JD and Bar Admission: JD from an accredited law school and admitted to practice law in good standing (preferably in California).
  • Experience: 6+ years of legal practice, including law firm and in-house and/or internal regulatory agency experience, with 3+ years in the energy industry (clean energy or utility industry experience preferred).
