The Financial Post is Canada’s leading business news brand and serves the National Post and other Postmedia properties, including the Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Ottawa Citizen and Montreal Gazette.

The Opportunity:

The Financial Post is hiring a Bureau Chief to help grow our brand in Western Canada. The role reports to the Editor-in-Chief of the Financial Post and will involve working closely with a team of Financial Post and Postmedia reporters, primarily in Western Canada, with the goal of generating the kind of timely, in-depth reporting that has made the Financial Post an essential source of Canadian economic and business news for more than a century.

What you’ll do:
  • Help set the daily agenda and coordinate the work of a team of journalists covering business and economic topics, in connection with other Postmedia editors in the region
.
  • Assign, edit, rewrite and post stories on a daily basis, under tight deadlines, as needed
  • Be willing to report and write when needed
  • Coordinate with the national editing team based in Toronto on a daily basis.

  • Pursue new ways to connect with readers and develop products relevant for Western and national audiences, such as newsletters and virtual or in-person events.

Who you are: 

  • You have 5+ years of reporting and/or editing experience in a daily newsroom, preferably in business journalism

  • You are a steady newsroom hand, a collaborative teammate and self-starter who can do their job with minimal oversight, but take direction when required

  • You have a demonstrated ability to work with reporters, including assigning stories, editing a significant flow of raw copy and rewriting when required, all on strict deadlines

  • You are familiar with the business climate in Western Canada, in particular the people, companies and issues that shape Canada’s energy sector

  • You possess strong copy-editing skills and knowledge of CP Style 

  • You are willing to represent the Financial Post at events and work on new products that serve and expand our audience, such as newsletters

  • You are familiar with the steps involved in preparing articles for online publication
