Do you thrive in environments that require precision and a solid understanding of accounting principles specific to insurance and reinsurance? If this describes your expertise and career aspirations, then our Senior Accountant position at Understory is the perfect opportunity for you.

We are seeking a Senior Accountant to enhance our financial team, specializing in the insurance industry. Your main role responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing accurate and timely financial statements and reports, proactively identifying and resolving discrepancies to maintain strict compliance and data integrity.
  • Conducting detailed reconciliations of all accounts—demonstrating flexibility in juggling multiple priorities while adhering to rigid deadlines and evolving regulatory standards.
  • Maintaining and executing comprehensive journal entries and other accounting records, documenting procedures meticulously for transparency and efficient reference.
  • Leveraging in-depth knowledge of insurance accounting practices, including premium earning and loss recognition, to provide clarity and consistency across all financial documentation.
  • Assisting with reinsurance accounting and related financial management tasks, problem-solving collaboratively with cross-functional teams when complexities arise.
  • Collaborating with internal audit teams to ensure compliance with all financial regulations and policies, applying proactive communication and stakeholder management principles.
  • Participating in financial standards setting and forecast processes, taking ownership of key deliverables and adapting seamlessly to changes in direction or scope.
You're exactly the professional we're looking for if you:
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA is preferred.
  • Have at least 5 years of accounting experience, specifically within the insurance industry, and excel at maintaining accuracy and thoroughness in all tasks.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of insurance and reinsurance accounting principles, balancing stakeholder needs with organizational objectives.
  • Are proficient with accounting software and systems, and practice clear, consistent documentation to ensure seamless data flow and auditing.
  • Possess excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills—staying focused under pressure and resisting overwhelm when managing multiple projects.
  • Showcase a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality results, easily pivoting as priorities shift.
  • Embrace a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency, collaborating readily with cross-functional teams and adapting to changes without overreliance on rigid processes.
Compensation includes:
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
Join Understory as a Senior Accountant and play a critical role in our financial management, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and operational excellence.
