About The Role
Symetra is seeking an experienced and dynamic Vice President of Engineering to join our leadership team. This pivotal role requires a seasoned leader who can balance technical excellence, business acumen, and people-first leadership. The ideal candidate will bring a start-up mentality to drive innovation while demonstrating deep experience scaling engineering teams and delivering results within fast-paced organizations.
What You Will Do
- Build a highly technical, supportive, and inclusive team environment
- Collaborate with business partners to build a technical strategy for the company’s emerging solutions and established lines of business
- Advocate (where appropriate) for new technologies and help business partners understand benefits of utilization
- Use intel and technology experience to advise strategic direction and the delivery of innovative and modernize customer experiences.
- Partner with Technology & Operations Solutions leadership to support strategy execution; sought out as a trusted advisor of Symetra’s business division leaders
- Coach and mentor technologists to help them reach their potential
- Work hands-on with your team on impactful engineering work
- Recruit, hire, grow, and retain engineering and architecture talent
- Cultivate an engineering culture that emphasizes quality, agility, experimentation, and continuous delivery while removing roadblocks
- Champion collaboration across teams, especially in the identification of common challenges and the promotion of re-usable solutions
Be a technologist!
- Lead large, complex initiatives that deliver modern customer products and experiences
- Responsible for delivering high quality products on time
- Develop an architecture that is flexible and scalable as we grow
- Build a highly reliable, secure, scalable, and performant tech stack
- Provide leadership and collaboration regarding key technology decisions
- Actively pursue the reduction of technology debt where possible and reduce operational risk
Your Skills And Experience
- Brings modern knowledge in software engineering and solutions architecture
- 10+ years of engineering leadership, including scaling and growing successful teams.
- Outstanding communication, listening, and empathy skills as judged by your teammates; ability to walk the talk with change management
- Extraordinary at balancing long-term technology investments against short-term business needs
- Proven past technical accomplishments and ability to be “hands-on” when vital
- Startup experience, FinTech/Insurtech experience a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.

Compensation
Salary Range: $200,000 - $300,000 plus eligibility for executive annual bonus programs
Travel
Required Training & Professional Development
All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra’s corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
